For those who weren't around during the glorious summer of 1982, it might seem like a random, inconsequential date. But as Yahoo! pointed out in a recent slideshow, 1982 was a summer of classics. Fifteen cinematic beasts turn 30 this summer, and each one has stood the test of time. Some of them -- "Conan the Barbarian," "The Thing," "TRON" -- have recently been the subjects of remakes. But let's not dwell on the negative.

From Cameron Crowe's screenwriting breakthrough, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," to Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning masterpiece, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the summer of 1982 was a great time to be alive. In addition to the films listed below, Yahoo!'s slideshow includes "The Road Warrior," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "The Secret of Nimh," "The World According to Garp," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Night Shift," and "Pink Floyd -- The Wall." All of them have aged extremely well.

Of course, if you think "Grease 2" or "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" are more deserving of the title, feel free to write one of those in, too! You can see a full list of 1982 releases here. Yahoo! kept its selection to movies released between May and August, but we won't tell anyone if you bend it a bit. What do you think is the best movie classic from the summer of 1982?

The fact that "Fast times at Ridgemont high" is higher than "Poltergeist" is a dang shame...

Oh my GOD Grease 2 was probably one of the worst things to come on a screen EVER besides Saturday Night Fever 2 and a couple of others....

I like ET I remember my mom bought the movie and showed it to me. I'm pretty sure it was one of the earlier movies I ever remember seeing other than Toy Story 2.

I agree Grease 2 was kind of dumb but it did introduce Michelle Pfiffer to the public and had Judy Garland's other daughter Lorna Luft in it

This movie scared the CRAP out of me. All of the "Poltergeist" movies did.

I can't believe this movie came out in 1982...

    The Dark Crystal

I played it for my son on Netflix and he wanted to go see it in the theater. I had a hard time explaining that it hadn't been in theaters for a long time. (I know, there's the occasional re-release in theaters, but it's not all that often. If it happens close enough, I'll take my boy so he can watch it "properly".)

Hell yea! I love that movie.

The 80's were a great time for movies. Most of them didn't have millions of dollars to spend on FX so they had to make up for it in having an actual storyline, fun characters, etc. I had a chance to watch the "Making of The Dark Crystal" and was amazed at how much Jim Henson went through to get this project done.

I've always been a huge "movie geek" so when I see a movie, I try to find out all the obscure "behind the scenes" crap that goes with it. *grins*

Tron was a close second in my book (followed by ET), but Blade Runner, Ford in his prime, just bad-ass...

Oh. It was mentioned in the description box.
  • Dyonus some id... 2012/06/13 07:31:58
Monty Python has done other stuff besides Holy Grail. They had a TV series before that. The description wasn't referring to Holy Grail.

By the way, did you know that Starships are all upholstered in "rich Corinthian leather?"

First time I saw the wall I was actually on acid,(shh don't tell anybody) changed my life. I'll never look at worms or brains the same again.

I picked other because I would pick several for different reasons; ET for tearjerker value,Rocky III for Boxing movie value,Fast Times for Teen Movie value, and The Thing for horror/gore.
