For those who weren't around during the glorious summer of 1982, it might seem like a random, inconsequential date. But as Yahoo! pointed out in a recent slideshow, 1982 was a summer of classics. Fifteen cinematic beasts turn 30 this summer, and each one has stood the test of time. Some of them -- "Conan the Barbarian," "The Thing," "TRON" -- have recently been the subjects of remakes. But let's not dwell on the negative.

From Cameron Crowe's screenwriting breakthrough, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," to Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning masterpiece, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the summer of 1982 was a great time to be alive. In addition to the films listed below, Yahoo!'s slideshow includes "The Road Warrior," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "The Secret of Nimh," "The World According to Garp," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Night Shift," and "Pink Floyd -- The Wall." All of them have aged extremely well.

Of course, if you think "Grease 2" or "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" are more deserving of the title, feel free to write one of those in, too! You can see a full list of 1982 releases here. Yahoo! kept its selection to movies released between May and August, but we won't tell anyone if you bend it a bit. What do you think is the best movie classic from the summer of 1982?

Touche...however, that is still not the point. There is no doubt that ET is technically a better film by far...The fact that one is dirrected towards a younger audience is a different matter. I am not interested in watching Dumbo either but I know it is a wonderful picture...so is Wizard of Oz but I would rather watch a Charles Bronson film tonight. It does not mean it is inferior to the Bronson film just that that is what I want tonight.

As a science fiction fan, I should probably have voted for the renown Bladerunner--except that somehow I missed that movie that year, and indeed have never gotten around to seeing it. So I had to go with the best of the movies here I've actually seen. :-)

I personally had a lot of trouble deciding on whether to vote for Blade Runner or E.T.

Blade Runner is in my top 3 favorite movies, and I think it is close to the finest sci fi movie ever made. In my book, it easily kicks the crap out of the other movies listed here. Not that they're bad movies, it's just Blade Runner is so good. Tron is a distant second.

I had trouble deciding between ET and Blade Runner... but they are so different from each other, it's like comparing apples & oranges.

    I'm surprised nobody mentioned Ghandi

    Ben Kingsley Gandhi

All-star performances, especially an unknown actor portraying the title role; cinematography on all locations and stage sets; mixed portrayals (America, India and England); what more could you ask from a biopic?
  • Ian filmgame92 2012/06/13 07:46:28

Ghandi was excellent, I agree. Was it also 1982?

I'm a Trekkie, so "STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN" was on the top of my list back then. But clearly we had some really good pictures that came out that summer.
