For those who weren't around during the glorious summer of 1982, it might seem like a random, inconsequential date. But as Yahoo! pointed out in a recent slideshow, 1982 was a summer of classics. Fifteen cinematic beasts turn 30 this summer, and each one has stood the test of time. Some of them -- "Conan the Barbarian," "The Thing," "TRON" -- have recently been the subjects of remakes. But let's not dwell on the negative.

From Cameron Crowe's screenwriting breakthrough, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," to Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning masterpiece, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the summer of 1982 was a great time to be alive. In addition to the films listed below, Yahoo!'s slideshow includes "The Road Warrior," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "The Secret of Nimh," "The World According to Garp," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Night Shift," and "Pink Floyd -- The Wall." All of them have aged extremely well.

Of course, if you think "Grease 2" or "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" are more deserving of the title, feel free to write one of those in, too! You can see a full list of 1982 releases here. Yahoo! kept its selection to movies released between May and August, but we won't tell anyone if you bend it a bit. What do you think is the best movie classic from the summer of 1982?

"The Thing" was a classic and well done. Blade Runner and Rockey were okay. Poltergeist was a joke. I did not see the rest.

For proving that computer animation was a valuable film technique and for giving us films we never would have dreamt of without it

This film was so far ahead of its time. It was appreciated by few at the time but now it is a classic

Passed over for an oscar in special effects because they thought CGI was cheating. Personally I'm glad Disney was able to do TRON justice with it's sequel

Well lol, there was a sequel, as good as the first in my book, 7 or 8 yrs after the first.
In OZ it was simply called Man from Snowy River II, but in US, I think it was 'Return of the Snowy' or something! ;)

I liked the way the 2nd culminated the story
The 1st was left open-ended for a sequel
But just Great Productions - both of them!
They had everything - Great music, terrific panoramic scenery, solid storyline, romance, adventure, great soundeffects, Fights, humour, authenticity and Legend of Banjo Paterson and action-packed Lol to boot ;)
    Just Terrific movies for mine

Steven Spielberg's "E.T." is one of the best films of all-time! It should have won Best Picture over "Gandhi." I really liked "Gandhi" and Ben Kingsley in it, but "E.T." is just so involving emotionally and visually. The first time I saw it was when I was 5 at the drive-in with my mom and sister. http://images.sodahead.com/pr... http://images.sodahead.com/pr... http://images.sodahead.com/pr...
