For those who weren't around during the glorious summer of 1982, it might seem like a random, inconsequential date. But as Yahoo! pointed out in a recent slideshow, 1982 was a summer of classics. Fifteen cinematic beasts turn 30 this summer, and each one has stood the test of time. Some of them -- "Conan the Barbarian," "The Thing," "TRON" -- have recently been the subjects of remakes. But let's not dwell on the negative.

From Cameron Crowe's screenwriting breakthrough, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," to Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning masterpiece, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the summer of 1982 was a great time to be alive. In addition to the films listed below, Yahoo!'s slideshow includes "The Road Warrior," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "The Secret of Nimh," "The World According to Garp," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Night Shift," and "Pink Floyd -- The Wall." All of them have aged extremely well.

Of course, if you think "Grease 2" or "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" are more deserving of the title, feel free to write one of those in, too! You can see a full list of 1982 releases here. Yahoo! kept its selection to movies released between May and August, but we won't tell anyone if you bend it a bit. What do you think is the best movie classic from the summer of 1982?

I enjoyed it more late in life. When I was a stupid kid, I kind of liked E.T. but I would not watch it again.

TRON, Blade Runner and Fast Times were good ones too.

EDIT: Holy crap...I just looked it up; how did you guys miss Star Trek II?

Well I tried to find it on Netflix and it wasn't there so I watched Firestarter instead. It's amazing to re watch something and realize it's not as awesome watching it at 36 as apposed to age 8 back in the 80's LOL!

That's very true. I watched Blade Runner recently and it's still just as awesome because it's set in the future. 2015, I believe. I think it's even better now because of digital technology. If you've never seen it before, don't get the director's cut as you would probably get lost without Harrison Ford's narration, which is in the original version.

TRON really changed the game for movies. It was really the first film to show what CGI could do for films. A lot of modern films owe TRON a gratitude for laying the groundwork in terms of audience awareness and methodology.

Ahm, Poltergeist I would have to say for number 2. What's interesting is, they are both Spielberg. One is directed by, the other is created by.
    Poltergeist - Writer.
    E.T. Directer.
I would have to say Rocky III would be 3rd or so. followed by Tron. Unless Tron was better, from what I remember, Rocky III wasn't as good as expected.
Back in the 80s, Poltergeist was one of the most popular series of movies.

All and All though... E.T. was Top! E.T. had plenty of action. It had bits and pieces of drama, but best of everything else, it was also Family Appropriate.

Signing this one off there. ;-)

Just to add a correction onto myself, but I still stand by this.
(1982) - Movies of just the summer of.
E.T. pretty much was the best of all the 80s, not just 82.
