For those who weren't around during the glorious summer of 1982, it might seem like a random, inconsequential date. But as Yahoo! pointed out in a recent slideshow, 1982 was a summer of classics. Fifteen cinematic beasts turn 30 this summer, and each one has stood the test of time. Some of them -- "Conan the Barbarian," "The Thing," "TRON" -- have recently been the subjects of remakes. But let's not dwell on the negative.

From Cameron Crowe's screenwriting breakthrough, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," to Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning masterpiece, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the summer of 1982 was a great time to be alive. In addition to the films listed below, Yahoo!'s slideshow includes "The Road Warrior," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "The Secret of Nimh," "The World According to Garp," "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Night Shift," and "Pink Floyd -- The Wall." All of them have aged extremely well.

Of course, if you think "Grease 2" or "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" are more deserving of the title, feel free to write one of those in, too! You can see a full list of 1982 releases here. Yahoo! kept its selection to movies released between May and August, but we won't tell anyone if you bend it a bit. What do you think is the best movie classic from the summer of 1982?

Poltergeist used to scare the hell out of me. E.T. was a good movie too, but I just prefer scary movies.

For me, Blade Runner is head-and-shoulders above the rest, and was way ahead of it's time. I had the pleasure of seeing the Director's Cut in the theater in the late 90s. Awesome.

More choices like "all of them" or something please?

I loved and miss the 80's for all the good times.

I saw them all at the movie theater.

They were all great...No, they were fantastic.

Even though I liked those guys, I never let
Siskel and Ebert tell me what movies to watch.

Blade Runner -- a pre-CGI masterpiece and with one of the best film scores ever by Vangelis!

Absolutely! The score was something very special. It got me interested in lots of other work by Vangelis.

Many were great. Good year, like 1939. Somehow there seem to be "vintages" in films.

E.T was too "kiddie" movie for me, and "Blade Runner" was too film noir for me .... "Poltergeist" was much more thrilling than all the others listed

Without a doubt, ET Phones home with his Reese's Pieces and all the way to the bank! Quite a few good movies that year.. I remember being mesmerized by Tron and really loved Poltergeist on the big screen at the drive-in movie theater. :) Even Arnold as Conan the Barbarian was awesome!

I know ET is going to win, but for me (among the choices given), it was a toss-up between Blade Runner and The Thing. Went with The Thing for its great special effects for the time and its metaphor-as-AIDS angle. However, the "most under rated" film of that year is My Favorite Year, an almost perfect comedy that has a great theme and is one of Peter O'Toole's best performances. See that one if you haven't yet.

How did you get an AIDS message out of The Thing?
  • piscespoet ✞Knight... 2012/06/15 15:35:10
    piscespoet
Actually, may be more allegorical than metaphorical, but it's the blood that reveals the alien life form, and it concumes whatever it mimics. Also, check out Cronenberg/Goldblum's The Fly for much the same thing.

Interesting analogy but if you look at all of the interviews with John Carpenter about The Thing, you'll find there is no AIDS message. The blood idea was created in 1938 in Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr. (The source material of The Thing). Considering AIDS didn't even exist in 1938, I don't think there was a real AIDS message.

E.T., for my money, is one of the very best movies of all time. Rocky III and Poltergeist were very good. It is very annoying when you are typing and the letters just stop appearing on this screen
