Four southeast Iowa men were recently arrested for Noodling. Iowa has a law against it. Thirteen, mostly southern states permit ,Noodling. Iowa DNR claims Noodling fails to meet, fair chase standards. These men had sunk large galvanized bathtubs in a shallow stretch of the River. The Catfish typically nest in cavities, so are drawn to these tubs during spawning season. The DNR also said these tubs are essentially a trap, since they only have one opening. Iowa fish managers believe the exploitation of large spawning fish threatens the stability of Catfish population. DNR says if they ever permit noodling it would be for catch and release only.

But if you are brave enough to just stick your hand down and the water and wait, I don't really have a problem with it. With that said, you would NEVER see me doing that- I would totally freak out!!reply

I would not stick my hand down there either, but when the experts tell me it has an effect on the fish population, I have a tendency to go with the experts. If not for that I would say it was a gutsy sport.reply - HarleyCharley 2012/07/01 13:54:51It is for gathering meat and as much as you can.+1I don't think they should use the tubs..reply

I agree, the tubs are nothing but a trap. I don't know if any of the other states that allow this, also allow the tubs. We also have to think of how it effects the population of catfish, since these are usually very large female fish that produce a lot of eggs.reply
