Its a post apocalyptic story about 12 districts controlled by a capitol ran by a president who because of an uprising decided to make an example of what happens when you try to go against him. He does this by making a televised battle to the death arena every year with 2 children between the ages of 12 and 18. Every year Hunger Games, as its called takes place and every year it is different. One thing remains the same, 24 children enter and only one comes out alive. The children are put against each other to fight to the death and whoever is crowned victor gains food for their family who typically has been left by capitol to live in squalor. The contestants are chosen by a drawing. The poorer the family the more they have to resort to trading grain and fuel for having their names put in more than once. Kids die.. Alot of kids die and you see it happen. Not for the highly sensitive.
It was something with the government about war. So as a punishment each year they would send a tribute a girl and boy from the 12 districts ranging from the ages of 12-18 to be trained in the art of survival for the fight to the death. And thus The Hunger Games
I saw the movie before reading the book and I had no trouble understanding it. I proceeded to come hoe, download the book to my phone, zip through it and do the same with the following two books. I do recommend reading them, they are great, but you can see the movie either way!
We saw it on Imax tonight and it was awesome. It's a must see whether you've read the book or not...we didn't. There are a few areas where a transition is awkward and details murky, but the drama overwhelms these minors flaws. As far as casting, here's my personal opinion: the more likely you are to recognize an actor, the less that actor contributes to the film. The new blood performed very well.
Read the book and you'll understand everything :P
But essentially, it is set in the future North America in a country called Panem that is spilt up into 12 districts that are ruled by a Capitol and provide for the Capitol. As a punishment from their last rebellion about 75 years ago, the Capitol started running "The Hunger Games" where a boy and girl from each districts between the ages of 12 and 18 are forced to fight to the death, with one remaining victor. It's about a girl's experience of this, but I won't give anything but background info away (: I hope you enjoy the movie, though I'm sure it would be much more enjoyable if you read the books! So good!
It's not necessarily hard to understand, it's just kind of far out there because it takes place in the future and has different terms and concepts that may confuse you. The best way for you to fully understand the plot is to read the books; there amazing and won't disappoint you :)
