It really depends. I mean some people think certain genres of music aren't even music. Like dubstep. I don't like dubstep but I don't think it's less musical than Rhianna's crap. I suppose it's just more avant garde.

Personally I think it depends on the artist. Some musicians just sing the song but it doesn't have any depth so it doesn't really get the message across other are so heart felt that you are living the song as they sing it. Then there are the complete nonsense songs that have no meaning at all to any one.

It should be entertaining, yet still be communication. The best type of music should talk To you, not ABOUT you. Sadly (and not to bash pop lovers) alot of today's modern music is about materialistic things; not anything meaningful.

It should be communication first, entertainment second. Unfortunately how that pans out for a genre, song, or group, depends entirely on the person listening. I personally can't listen to pop music, it literally holds nothing for me, but that's just me.

For me, music is the purest form of getting out emotions. It's the purest expression of how the artist feels. I love music as it has always helped me to deal with my emotions since no matter how you feel there is always a song about it.

Music can pick me up, give me something to think about, even make me shed tears. I love music because it lets you go into another world, and you can experience so many different things from it. I also like how you can relate music to different situations and other things in the media.

To me, true music is an expression and an art...and that's entertaining to me. Unfortunately, a large amount of what the music industry puts out there doesn't seem to fall into that description.

Depends who the performers are.

If it has anything to do with Jazz and Classical, it's communication. These kind of musicians will go out of their way to "communicate" how much musical and technical skill they possess :)

Certain genres of Rock, Pop and Rap/Hip-Hop is pure entertainment that doesn't require a great deal of skill to perform.
