To be an American is to be a Christian, or a Jew, or Muslim, or a Pagan, or a Hindu, Buddhist, atheist, or any of the hundreds of religions on this earth. More importantly, it is to be accepting of others who do not share your beliefs.
To be an American is to be a Liberal or a Conservative, or a Libertarian, or any other political persuasion, or a-political; and while it's good for us to be strong in our philosophy, we must also recognize that the diversity of our ideas; and the freedom to publicly state them, is what makes our nation strong. For this reason, all ideas, no matter how absurd, are valuable, as are the people who hold them.
To be an American is to be a city slicker, or a country-boy, a yuppie, Bohemian, rich or poor, and to recognize the value in all others.
To be an American is to be a soldier, or an anti-war protester. To be a little bit country, or a little bit rock-n-roll. To be gay, straight or otherwise. To be happy or depressed, proud of our president or ashamed of him, hopeful of tomorrow or fearful.
America is no one thing. America is EVERYTHING. E Pluribus Unum
I am an American, and I approve this message.

That is a really hard question to answer. To be an american is to accept others with openness, no matter where they come from. Love your nation, but never become complacent with it's leadership, and to become a steward so you can promote instead of tear down the status of this Country.

Colloquially, a citizen of the United States of America. However, if of course literally means you are lost since there is no "America". We got North, Central, and South America.

It means that you just happen to be born in a certain space and time and on a certain piece of dirt. Really it doesn’t mean a thing because we are not any better or worse than anyone else on this planet

Personally, it simply means you were born in America. Nothing more. I don't feel as though you have to be super patriotic or love American sports to be American. Its just a reference to your nation/country of birth.

It means that you have the values of the constitution ingrained in your DNA, that no matter what you value your freedom and independence when when the rest of the world does it's own thing. People around the world argue that Americans have no culture, on the contrary, our culture IS the very freedom we have, and that we know we hold ultimate authority over our government. We are a people that don't live in fear because we know we will always rather die than not live free.

Being born in the United States, embracing American "culture." I would have chosen otherwise for both had I a choice. I greatly dislike the United States. I wish I had been born in Spain, or in Italy. Or in Germany/Austria.

    All American Division
The 82nd ABN was named All American because they had someone on heir rolls from every state and territory in the Division. Probably no big feat today. As a former member of the 82nd I am proud to have served my country and protect her way of life. For me Being American means that I have the freedoms and rights given to me by our forefathers. Freedom of speech means more to me than anything. Many countries do not give their citizens freedom of speech. I was a member of the 82nd when burning the American flag was declared a Freedom of Speech.expression. It tore my soul. Because I love my country I too supported American's right to burn the American Flag, tho deep down inside I hurt. I love my country, served her for 20 years and would do it again.

Technically, it means to be a citizen of one of the countries located in either North America or South America. Meaning that citizens of Canada, Mexico, the U.S., etc are all Americans.

However, the common usage is being a citizen of the United States (of America). Watch, someone is going to insist that I'm wrong. What they don't realize is that the United States is a PART of America, it's not America itself. Which is why it's the United States *OF* America.

This day in age it means equal money for all, not being rich, bashing gays, paying attention to celebrities who aren't good role models, banning all junk food, being a hypocrite, and being aggressive.

Being an American used to mean something.

Well, Jackal, if things don't get better in this country...it may come down to that. If it does, jackal, use wisdom in your decisions and always remember to be the solution to do good and never the problem...and you'll always come out on top.

It means you're US a citizen. That's it. There are far to many variations of every aspect to American's to gauge what makes them American other than the fact that they are citizens. I can almost guarantee that every American has an opinion of what being so means that another citizen will disagree with, the only thing that we all share, positively, is our citizenship.

    Believing you mean United States of America and not South America, to me what does it mean to be American is;
Duty, honor, democracy, freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to keep and bear arms, voting for who you want, Mom, and apple pie.
Now mind you, many of those things mentioned have changed and some are trying to change it more but according to my opinion the Constitution should NOT be changed at the whim of any politicians... Being an American gives us the right to throw out the idiots and protect our Constitutional Bill of Rights. so there, nuff said. http://images.sodahead.com/pr...
