Another hero franchise is hitting the big screen this summer, but "Conan the Barbarian" will be fending off evil without the help of superpowers.

Yahoo! released the film's first trailer on Thursday, and it looks like "Conan" is trying to find a spot between "Lord of the Rings" and "300."

The reboot stars Jason Momoa, an appropriately Cro-Magnon looking Hawaiian with muscles-to-spare, as the badass from Cimmeria, "black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth."

We're not as excited about this as, say, "The Green Lantern," but it looks like it has potential. What do you think?

Thats Ronin of " stargate atlantis " I remember when he first joined the show i said " he would make for a believable " Conan the barbarian " ( not too bulkilly muscular, more what a warrior from the era would look and act like ), then a few months later i heard one of the other " atlantis " carachters ( rodney ) refer to Ronin and Teyla as " Zena & Conan ". Now, I have to add casting agent to my list of ' professions i've missed my calling for . lol

It looks like a made for TV movie. I expect something like this to be darker.
It's way to polished and lacks believability. I'll wait till it's free on TV.

The original series was Tailor made for Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Way better than the crappy version Arnold was in. I read the Ron. E Howard novels growing up and this looks just like I'd imagined, channeling the whole Frank Frazetta vibe. Jason Momoa really looks like Conan--swarthy and grimy. Arnold gave a terrible portrayal of Conan, he was just Arnold with a sword. The world itself looks wild and violent, not the crusty wasteland we saw before.

I'm going to give a quick anecdote and then I'm done--

Ron E. Howard created Conan in the middle of a psychotic break. After drinking heavily during a vacation in Fredericksburg, Texas, he stayed awake for 4-5 days, sitting at his typewriter. Because of sleep deprivation psychosis and imagined that Conan the Cimmerian was standing over him with a battle axe, commanding, "Write my story."

Just to interject. His name is Robert E. Howard (yea, I was a fan four plus decades ago). He actually failed to write the complete saga of Conan before he committed suicide. His friend ( I use that term loosely), and fellow pulp fiction writer L Spraig De Camp stole his idea and ran with it for quite some time. It was actually not until the Conan franchise resurfaced with a furry that the real truth of Howard's genius was to become known. I agree that with your description of Conan, and I also agree that Arnie wasn't it. This guy is closer to Frazetta's rendition, which in my mind is Conan the barbarian...Just a thought...

Did I really write "Ron"? LOL. I must have written that late at night (12 hour time difference here in China). Like you, I read the novels growing up, although that was three decades ago for me, not four :P. I read a little of De Camp's stuff and it really didn't measure up to Howard's. Howard really tapped into something primal and exotic that the original film didn't touch at all. I remember seeing an interview with Oliver Stone, who wrote the original screenplay that was later destroyed and turned into the Arnoldified-cheese. He said that he'd pictured Conan taking on hordes of orcs and such.

Like you said, Frazetta's Conan is really what has stuck with me through the years. There have been so many depictions of him (Savage Sword of Conan had some pretty decent attempts) but those novel covers, with Conan standing over his prey, a half-naked maiden curled around his leg, really got it.

Robert E. Howard wrote Conan to be a tough human being who didn't rely on magical crutches to win the day. The series of books, written during the 1930s, was a rejection of superheroes and science fiction with the theme that conjured a time where muscle and steel was all a man truly needed.

The Conan series was made up of a collection of short stories and full novels that covered Conan's youth all the way to his 60s where he sailed off to the unknown so there's plenty of room to cover in movies without telling the same story twice.
