Was Mark Wahlberg's 9/11 Comment Insensitive?

It didn't take long for actor Mark Wahlberg to start back-pedaling on those 9/11 comments he made in the latest issue of Men's Journal. Wahlberg, who was originally scheduled to be on United 93, which crashed in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001, said things would have been different if he had been on the flight. Critics are calling the statement insensitive because it seems to assume the passengers who died on the flight could have -- or should -- have done more to prevent it.

He told Men's Journal, "If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.'" That sounds nice in theory, but it didn't fly with the families of victims. He later clarified that the whole premise of the statement was off. He told TMZ, "To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention." Do you think Mark Wahlberg's comments were inappropriate?

marky mark is a bada$$ and I'm sure he would have taken a stand IF there really was a flight 93. Question, why didn't he 'supposedly' not make this flight?? How can planes with veteran combat marines flying the plane allow some guys with utility knives take action? How could professional pilots not immediately hit mayday call signal even as they were being "attacked? How does every part of a HUGE plane just obliterate itself to unrecognizable rubble, even a complete titanium engine or 2. or even one of the terrorists passports found unscathed

The passengers on that plan were heros, and the fact that he would make such a condescending remark towards those people is disgusting. I'm all for free speech, so he had every right to say it, but that doesn't make it any less insensitive and inappropriate.

This is what happens when a celebrity does not think before expressing an opinion that carries a lot of weight , no one wants to hear their relatives in that flight were a bunch of cowards...I bet if they only knew their fate, everyone in that flight would´ve been alive today, so it is not fair what he said for the memory of those victims, specially he is an important person whom people listens for his roll in society, he has a responsability when he expresses anything at all to the news...I bet if the story repeats again, everyone will act like he claims he would had.

The man said that he wished he was there because he thinks he could have saved more lives. I dont see how this is offensive in any way besides a tad bit egotistical, so i believe its just people who are jealous of his machismo.

Mark Wahlberg is a wonderful actor. He comes from a hardened childhood. Your prospective on life and various situations is normally influenced by your background and upbringing. Mark Wahlberg only spoke from his heart as to what he would probably have done if he had been in the 9/11 terror to save his life. He did not hijack the plane, he hasn't terrorized the U.S. Mark Wahlberg is simply an American actor who commented in a magazine based on his beliefs and upbringing. He apologized and it is time for some people to move on. I will always watch his movies, he is just too fine and smart to ignore or boycott over a few ill gotten words. May I say NEXT!

I agree 100% with you, but this is like when you break the law and just can´t escape your either fine, punishment, or jail time, as Lindsay Logan, or the famous Paris Hilton, he has to apologize... for his saying carries weight, he is an important actor and news prints what celebrities have to say and spread it like a desease to make their money, people like him, has to think before he talks, I bet if your son, brother or mother or mine, were in that flight it would have hurt our feelings..!

I know exactly where Mr. Wahlberg is coming from. If you never had kids or you had kids but didn't have that "screw with me, no problem, but screw with my kids and prepare for a psycho experience then you may not understand where he was coming from! He said something that I have said many times when hearing about horrible things that others do. I project myself into the scene and play out how I would react to it. I do know that I would have risked my life especially in a situation where my child or children are in danger. I know because I put myself between a bear and my then 7 year old daughter. I stood my ground until I knew she was out of harms way not knowing or even considering what might happen to me. All his comment relays, at least to those who bother to look deeper (most people don't because they like to bitch) has more to do about frustration, pain and anger in regards to these horrors that happen and the wish of some of us to have been there to stop those horrors from happening. Add in being a very protective parent "If I was on that plane with my KIDS" ... he has that strong bond and will get in between danger and his children with no regard to his own life. Yup, if I was on that plane with my kids I'd want to be standing next to a guy like Mr. Wahlberg. As a matte...

And who knows, maybe it was and it all ended badly anyway. Anyone who loses loved ones are sensitive and people are usually respectful of that. But to have to walk around on egg shells forever? No. Move on. Accept the past because you can't change it. Live for today because your tomorrow may never come.

In the grand scheme what does it matter. Everybody in this whimpified society thinks they have the right to be offended and that nobody has the right to express an opinion unless it agrees with their point of view. Read the Constitution, nowhere does it state that you have the right to never be offended.
We all like to think we could have done something to change the outcome, but since the government has taken away our right and deprived us of the means to defend ourselves while aboard a commercial aircraft there isn't a lot one person could have done. But if the people aboard the aircraft had the means to defend themselves the outcome would probably have been very different.

I really don't understand. What Wahlberg suggested seems to be exactly what the passengers who took action were attempting to do. I think they all felt it was better for the plan to crash than reach its intended target. I doubt those who perished defending the capital from terrorists would be offended by his statement.

The Hijackers in the cockpit had control of the plane. I was not on there so I really can not say if the passengers made it to them or not. Granted they would have died before the plane hit the ground. The problem is, when someone is determined to die and take everyone with them, there is not much can be done. You do not reason with them and you sure don't share a burger with them either. Like the bumper sticker said, "Islamist want to die and meet God, the Marines are here to make the introduction."

I'm sick of people feeling like they have to back pedel on things they say. Were ALL going to say insensitive things in they eyes of someone throughout the course of a lifetime, and to feel like we have to apologize for every offensive comment is as ridiculous as the offended themselves. Yes, but I think his intentions were good. He was implying that he would have gone down fighting. Unfortunately, the way the journalist wrote it, It sounded arrogant and hurtful to survivors, but I truly think his intent was a good one. Writers can often take comments out of context and they sound differently when written in a certain way inside an article. I once was misquoted so badly in a news article that the context came across totally the opposite of what I said. A reporter can twist a few words around and change the tone and implications of anything. So who really knows what his exact sentiments were.

I have no idea since I didn't read the article. But, I was head of many Teacher groups and school advisory committees and thus quoted by newspapers at various times. If they leave out a word or rephrase what you said, it takes on a different tone or connotation. Perhaps that is what happened. It is not uncommon for reporters to rewrite words to their advantage for sensation. That is all I am saying. It has happened to me and I am not anyone famous. If a well known person is interviewed, you can bet they want top readership and anything slightly controversial will get noticed. I think ANYTHING can be misconstrued when in print. He could have made a joke and laughed but if the writer didn't put in "he jokingly stated" then the reader doesn't know it was said in jest. That is the kind of thing I
meant. I was just giving the guy the benefit of the doubt knowing how reporters turn words to their advantage.

The 2.25 seconds of Freefall in WTC7 that NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) ADMITS to is IMPOSSIBLE without Controlled demolition as all structural supports must be removed ahead of the collapse front, otherwise ANY intact structural resistance would slow the collapse to a rate less than freefall.
Freefall means all the object's gravitational potential is converted to motion, in order to crush tonnes of structural steel and concrete, a large part of that gravitational potential must be used, which would slow it down to a rate much less than freefall.

This proves beyond any doubt that the resistance was removed by explosives. The ONLY building collapses involving freefall speeds are controlled demolitions.

FACT 2 The north tower ACCELERATED through the lower section at a uniform 64% freefall, which means that the lower section exerted resistance equal to 36% of the weight of the upper section, Newton's third law of equal and opposing forces states that the top block thus exerted 36% of it's weight, which means it’s exerting much less force than when supported at rest. This means a large portion of the resistance was removed by explosives.

FACT 3: The top section of the North Tower almost fully disintegrated before the lower section started to explode downward, this disintegration would absorb any momentum and expelled the mass laterally, there was NO piledriver left to cause any kind of gravitational collapse!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

FACT4: The top section of the South Tower topples to an angle of 22 degrees. Basic physics shows that the shift in center of mass due to the angle means that any torque imparted by gravitational pressure on the lower section accelerates the rotation of the top mass. The base of the top section acting as a fulcrum.

The more gravitational pressure the top section provides, the more toppling would occur. discontinuation of the upper section's toppling proves the removal of the lower section's resistance, disproving gravity induced collapse and proving explosives.

An off centre, leaning mass CANNOT cause a symmetric collapse.

FACT 5: The symmetric, even collapse of WTC7 is IMPOSSIBLE without demolition as all structural supports must be removed simultaneously across each floor, and this repeated in sequence for each successive floor.this is impossible in a collapse resulting from structural or fire damage, as such causes result in organic uneven damage.

Even a slight integrity inequality ALWAYS leads to a messy uneven and in most cases partial collapse.

FACT 6: Office fires don't burn hot enough to weaken the steel. Steel has a high thermal conductivity, the large steel frame would draw away heat rapidly from hot spots. Quote from the FEMA report (Appendix A). "Recalling that the North Tower suffered no major structural damage from the intense office fire of February 23, 1975, we can conclude that the ensuing office fires of September 11, 2001, also did little extra damage to the towers."

The team at NIST could not get their computer model to collapse, in the end they managed a partial asymmetric collapse that looked nothing like the actual event by removing all thermal conductivity!!!

The smoke emanating from the towers turned black for a while preceding the collapses. Dark smoke implies the presence of soot, which is composed of uncombusted hydrocarbons. Soot is produced when a fire is oxygen-starved, or has just been extinguished. Soot also has a high thermal capacity and may act to rob a fire of heat by carrying it away.

Videos of people standing in the gash from he plane before the collapse proves the fires had progressed past their hottest point and combined with the sooty smoke, were cooling. Steel strengthens when it cools, it had survived it's weakest point. Why should it fail?

No steel high-rise has ever fully collapsed from fire.

FACT 7. Nanothermite a high-tech military-grade explosive was found throughout the WTC dust and analysed by top scientists, and published in the peer reviewed Open Chemical Physics Journal. All throughout the dust, iron-rich micro-spheres were present, the only way they can be formed is through a highly explosive, extremely high temperature event whereby the steel is vaporised, forming small round droplets due to surface tension.
