Was Lady Gaga's Fake Rolex Comment Offensive?

Lady Gaga angered Little Monsters all over Thailand on Thursday when she tweeted, "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex." Though she made a similar comment about Hong Kong when she toured there, many Thai fans took it as an insult.

According to Yahoo!, Thai people wrote things like: "We are more civilized than you think," and "She came to our home, but instead of admiring us she insulted us." One fan even wrote, "Welcome to the land of counterfeit products, love. I'm sure there are plenty of fake Gaga CDs, too." Do you think Lady Gaga's comment was insensitive, or just a harmless remark?

Our relica rolex watches are fake, but they are high end AAA replicas, most of them are exactly clones of the real watches. You want to buy fake Rolex and you come here, you can find fake men's and ladies watches in our online store, and as you may already know, the prices are very attractive.

It's pointless to include into a tweet that you would like to get lost in a "lady market" and buy fake rolex. What the real calamity is is those goggles she's wearing O_O

Yeah, she's pretty well traveled. She should have known better. "Fake Rolex" does sound offensive when you get down to it. (Wouldn't offend me, mind you, but we're not talking about me here.) I am not familiar with Gaga at all so I cannot speak to whether or not she intended to be funny or whatever but with her obvious influence over young people, she should be just a little bit more careful than most as to how she conducts herself in public in foreign countries. Diplomacy is a touchy, touchy thing. There are lots and lots of people who flat out do not understand how to be diplomatic and to curb their tongue on certain subjects when they are being hosted by another country. As I said, the woman is being paid big bucks for these things. She should have the common decency to at least read up a little bit on the country she's visiting.

You have obviously never been to Thailand! I purchased 4 fake watches there for $110. The open markets there are known for being a good place to haggle for goods. You can also bring a picture of any garment and a Taylor will custom make it for you for under a hundred dollars. But the phrase "Little Thai Monsters" may have not interpreted well in there Language.

Actually, kiddo, I was in Thailand when they were doing all that reconstruction work on the big Buddha in Bankgkok back in '71. That far enough back for ya? It was a very interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. They used those klongs -- is that how they spell it, the rivers that run all through there? -- for everything from drinking to swimming to laundry. I imagine it's not the same anymore, though, but I haven't seen any good TV travel shows lately. Maybe I should.

I know about the tailor-made suits and whatnot. I used to get them in Korea, where I spent 22 years. Hong Kong was a big deal with the clothing in those days.

But I do understand the availability of the cheap jewelry and fake Rolexes and whatnot. I tried hard to make my comments really broad and general because, as I stated, I don't know a thing about this Gaga dame. Also, I didn't read the article closely to figure out precisely what the circumstances were of what she said. But I probably messed that up and conveyed the picture that maybe I knew what I was talking about. I didn't. Sorry about that.

We'll have to swap tales about our Orient trips. A friend of mine and I took three weeks and a lot of sights, as I said, in '71. Those were some really, really fond memories I had. ...

Oh, before I go, you made a good point about the phrase "Little Thai Monsters" probably not being interpreted well in their language. That's probably 100% right on the mark!

    Have a great day.

She was being honest and they need to deal with it. If the people there don't like it then why don't they change the way things are there instead of being an ostrich with their heads in the sand....

But a lot of Thais did get offended, not because she wanted a fake rolex, that is easy to find, but because 'she basically announced to the rest of the world that Thailand is the place to come for illegal, knock off products. It is bad for our image.' said a shopkeeper from Chatuchak market that sells fake Louis Vuitton bags. She offended may local businesses like the ripped and burned DVD salesmen at Panthip, who are offering to change all the downloaded Lady Gaga DVD-RW's to Justin Bieber hits in protest.

Also, umm Lady Gaga, getting lost in a lady market might not be something you want to do. Be specific because the term "lady market" is open to interpretation out here.

My hope was that she would wear one of her meat dresses and be attacked by soi dogs.

I can't imagine she intended ANY ind of insult to the people there. But in any major city around the world, some things are easy to find and I am SURE she was able to find her watch if she wanted to. Come to LA and find fake bags and shoes. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass about labels and just buy an inexpensive version of what I like. Rolex is the most copied style of watch out there. Everyone makes a version of it, legally. I used to sell watches in a store, so I am well aware.

If the truth angers "some people" then it's up to those "some people" to find a way to be okay with that truth. If they choose to get their knickers in a twist because their area of the world does, in fact, manufacture knock-off merchandise, it's really not anyone else's responsibility.
