Was Kings of Leon Drummer's Comment Toward 'Glee' Creator Homophobic?

Whether creator Ryan Murphy wants to admit it, not everyone is itching to appear on "Glee." But Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill may have taken the issue too far.

After hearing that Murphy had criticized his band for not allowing "Glee" to use their music, Followill posted an angry tweet that read, "Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f–k."

Murphy immediately took Followill's comment to be a homophobic attack and responded through Perez Hilton.

According to Hilton, Murphy wrote, "Wow. That's a homophobe badly in need of some education. I'm all for manicures, don't wear a bra. Would guess most gay dudes don't. But it's telling that Nathan can reduce a group of people to a mean-spirited cliché, in a time where young gay men are killing themselves all over the country because of hatred like this."

Followill apologized after the media picked up on it, tweeting, "I'm sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I'm so not that kind of person. I really do apologize."

Sure ya do.

I would think making fun of a certain agenda would be a discrimination. Whether it was between friends talking... The issue was was made public. It may have been a joke, but offensive to others. The internet can be cruel sometimes.

I'm largely undecided. If not homophobic, then definitely misogynistic; wearing a bra is what females do and is therefore considered "weak" (as conveyed in its use as an insult). Whether he was furthermore adding a layer of homophobia is unclear.

Why does everyone have to bow down to the gay mafia?
Ms. Murphy can't even speak fopr her self, SHE has to ask the deviant perez hilton to do it?

Hey, everyone calm down. Lars took it this very issue up. It is THEE ARTIST. Not us, not a producer, not a megalomaniac soon to be NADA in two years w/o a show. Yep, trust me. KOL WILL BE AROUND MEGA LONGER than these shoddy toddies. KOL will have more ORIGINAL KILLER MATERIAL than GLEE can copy off of. I. Will take.original material and a bandmate/s stance over any POSEUR copycat show doomed to evaporate inevitably; than a BAND that deserves to be in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. SO, SAYETH Chitown. Don't like it, welp, refresh yourself w/First Amendment and id ya still don't like it...take a HIKE. ; ) RIGHT ON KOL

eh, it was a little rude, but i don't think he meant any harm. and the band shouldn't have been criticized for not letting the show use their music. as i recall, a while ago there was another question on here asking if the band was egotistical for not appearing on something. SO WHAT?? WHO CARES???

P.S. i'm not like taking sides or anything... i LOVE GLEE<3 and i love Ryan Murphy(:

While the comment was less than tasteful it was anything but homophobic. It was a comment on how Murphy was acting like a sterotypical girl. It was retaliation for Murphy's comment about Kings of Leon not allowing their songs to be used on Glee. I am a Glee fan and even I think Murphy went all dramatic for nothing. Murphy twisted Followill's words. I would think feminists would get angrier over Followills words rather than homosexuals

There should be a choice for "who really cares" because who really cares? Two dummies talking to each other and then one crying on the shoulder of a complete dweeb, why is this even a topic of discussion? SodaHead must be having a slow day.

As a matter of fact a lot of musicians have more respect for their art than to let it be used in commercials or kid shows or whatever. And it is that artists right as to how much control he wants over WHAT HE OR SHE CREATED! I personally am getting sick of being politically correct, because it is starting to border on some form of Nazism.

I say, "sheesh, don't get you panties in a wad" regardless of gender orirentation (basically to everyone), and sometimes the occasional "twist my nipples and call me sally! No freaking way! o.O"..how that pertains to this poll, I don't quite remember....but I did have a reason. X3 Just reminds me of something I would've said.

Murphy should not have assumed everyone would jump through hoops to let him use their music. He should have taken the no responce gracefully but he had to be a drama queen about it so he got a responce befitting his actions.

If anyone takes that as homophobic, they are too mentally fragile. The fact that he has to apologize for venting is really ridiculous.

So he sic'd Perez Hilton on him. Wasn't he the guy that bashed the beauty queen because she didn't want to go along with the PC and call the gay lifestyle "normal" and teach it in schools?
I have gay friends, but I wouldn't promote their being gay as "normal", normal for them. What they do behind closed doors is their own business.
  • Dyllun ... Patriot... 2011/01/28 05:08:04

well i wouldn't promote your heterosexual lifestyle as normal, can you please keep everything you do behind closed doors.

And yes, heteroesexuals should also keep their business behind closed doors. There is way too much nudity and sex in the media, but it is the media's way to corrupt the country and bring about our downfall. American popular culture is as bad as the Roman empire. I am fed up withe the lack of morality and "anything goes" mentality.

That was the point. He's stereotyping gays so I'm stereotyping drummers. I will say, though, that I didn't make that clear and it's hard to convey sarcasm over the internet.

Regardless, I still say he didn't mean anything serious by it.

Because he's being prissy? I mean that type of "OMG WHYYYY?!" is stereotypical of girls (for good reason). And girls (at least the ones I know) are prissy.

It was someone speaking out of anger. When you're pissed at some dude for startin crap cuz you wont let your music be on Glee, you say some things. Everyone makes mistakes, people, and instead of taking it to an entirely unrealistic level, you need to sit down, shut up, get the hell over it, and find another band.

No, "homophobia" is a stupidly meaningless term. It goes along with the politically-correct definitions of "hate" and "gay". This merely shows that Followill is not politically-correct. Otherwise I could care less, but in this situation I say "do it again!"
