Was Fantasia's Suicide Attempt a Publicity Stunt?

Cynical celebrity watchers are buzzing that Fantasia Barrino's recent suicide attempt may have been, at its heart, nothing but a publicity stunt.

After all, here we are a mere two weeks later, and Fantasia is up and about, working the talk show circuit. And lo and behold, she has an album coming up.

What a coincidence!

I mean, seriously. What are the odds? How long has it been since anyone has discussed Fantasia Barrino in the press? A long time, that's how long. Her career has been creeping perilously close to oblivion, and she needed to do something.

She also has a VH1 reality show, "Fantasia for Real," that undoubtedly could use some melodrama, press attention and better ratings. And yes, don't you doubt it, cameras were filming throughout the entire ordeal.

Although producers are reworking the first few episodes of "Fantasia for Real," they will be including scenes of her stay in the hospital where she was treated after ingesting an overdose of aspirin and sleep aids.

Cameras also filmed Fantasia and her boyfriend, Antwaun Cook, holding hands, walking around town, discussing the hospitalization and the lawsuit being filed by Cook's wife, the impetus for the alleged suicide attempt.

TMZ, US Weekly and People magazine have all gone on record questioning the incident, wondering if the suicide attempt was manufactured as a publicity stunt for both the reality show and the album, "Back to Me," released this week.

You can add SodaHead to that list of skeptics, please.

Of course it was a publicity stunt. And of course it's an awful, horrific thing to question a suicide attempt. To accuse someone of using something that in normal life is a very serious, tragic, and legitimate disease is heinous. But HOLLYWOOD IS HEINOUS. Think of all the pathetic girls who used "oops how did that sex tape of me get out there?" to jump start their non-existent or impending doomed careers! It's sad, it's wrong, it's offensive, but it's also most likely true. The timing is soooo perfect, and as everyone else has said here, if she really wanted to do it, she would have done it. I feel bad for her. Stooping to that level in the name of money and fame is an absolute sin.

No, Fantasia wouldn't go that far for publicity.

I dont think so because the chances of negative publicity hurting her would be just as high as a chance of positive publicity. I think she is probably smart enough to know that, and to know that what she took really could of killed her.

It could have been a publicity stunt. It could also be that it wasn't a coincidence that right as she had the stress of coming out with a new album, working on a reality show, and dealing with personal drama, she snapped and tried to kill herself. It's hardly crazy to consider, people who are suicidal seem normal in public life all the time, likely doubly so for actors. And the risk of death is a little much for a person to weigh against a little fame, especially with sex tapes being all the rage these days as a ticket to instant attention. Certainly, it could have been faked. But it's just as likely that it was a real attempt, or at the very least as real as so many other suicide attempts. I'm not only skeptical, I'm skeptical of the kneejerk skeptics. I just simply don't know.

The real point for me is that I don't know who she is, so I have no real stake in it either way. If it was fake, shame on her. If it was real, I hope she finds peace, no one deserves to feel that way.

Modest but real. Yah heard me?
I reveled in the fact that Fantasia won American Idol but the timing of this incident; in the light of the scandal upon her was too consistent , if you will. Everyone has problems and she's no exception but ah the way she did this may have worked in her favor because though the scandal hasn't raved yet ..... the scenario went from home- wrecker unto-troubled women. The sympathy, pity scheme......... she played this one perfect! Just dont play it again Sam you might get what you ask for. Heard me?

I would hope she wouldn't go that far, but she's been a mess all along.

I also know someone who is suicidal doesn't bounce back that quickly.

All of this combined with her sets of many red flags. Too many.

Damn, you mean another self absorbed star is still alive after lying about an attempt? Phil Hartman, Jimi Hendrix, Chris Fairley...they die, people like this live forever.

At least it wasn't the new rage....a 'secret sex tape' that has a screenwriter and edits

This is a very fragile person who was not prepared to handle the 'star life'. Uneducated and misinformed by the people around her she was not able to understand what she was able to agree to and what she was able to say 'no' to. This was not a publicity stunt, and she should be watched and councelled closly.

When I read that it was a suicide attempt, it was a facepalm feeling. She should know that there are other ways to solve the problem.

Did she really take a 'whole' bottle of asprin or a few to make it look good. I'm totally suspicious of any intent to really die. She was one of American Idol's worst winners.

I don't think that Fantasia would try to kill herself just to get some kind of publicity, but if she did, then she still need some kind of psychological help because this isn't normal behavior.

After reading and watching more about this fiasco, I'm in agreement with the tabloids and SodaHead. Publicity is written all over it. Asprin and sleep aids don't a suicide make. It's the poor soul who plunges 10 stories to their death that is serious in their "attempt". Out of curiosity I tuned into her "reality" show. I wish I could say it was worth watching. Sorry Fantasia, not reality-worthy. The drama seems to be manufactured. Perhaps she's just too ordinary to be interesting. One more interesting note was I watched a short clip from the producer of "The Color Purple" on Broadway and he said she was let go from the show due to missing 50 SHOWS!! 50? Not 3....50? What I don't understand about that is she really needed the money at the time and if you're starring on Broadway you're making some bucks! Success and the celebrity that comes with it does come at a price. There is sacrifice involved. You sacrifice a lot of your time, your energy and your personal life. But, that's the way it goes. Is Fantasia ready to truly make the sacrifices necessary to achieve true superstardom?

She tried to kill herself with asprin and sleep aids.Weak. Sounds like she didn't really want to die. I know you can O.D. on asprin and over the counter sleeping pills, but it's pretty hard.

    Lame.
