Many songs have been re-made over the years and few do it as good or better than the original. Although I am a serious Hendrix fan, I believe the late Stevie Ray Vaughn actually did it better than the Legend that is HENDRIX.

They are both amazing renditions...I would call their takes on this particular song a dead heat. I do have to give the edge to Hendrix for penning the song.

I am writing this because incorrect spelling of my favourite guitarists names really annoys me. Above the 2 guitarists in question have both had their names spelt incorrectly. Also the song that everyone is referring to is spelt incorrectly as well. First of all it's Jimi Hendrix (not Jimmy) and it's Stevie Ray Vaughan (not Vaughn). Also I have the original Polydor version of Electric Ladyland (with the nude women on the cover) and both the slow one is Voodoo Chile and the wah one that we're talking about is also Voodoo Chile (slight return), Both are Chile which is just an abreviation for child. I know there have been a lot of compilations dvd's etc produced since his death that show Voodoo Child (slight return) but these are incorrect. That's what happens when people who know nothing about the artist are put in charge of future releases. Have a look at any Stevie Ray Vaughan version of this song and it will be spelt Chile. Sorry for being so picky but we're talking about 2 heroes of mine. So please guys at least try to spell their names correctly. BTW I love both versions but it has to go to Jimi because this is one of the songs that inspired SRV to play the way he did. Thanks for listening

You're new to SH clearly, so I will make an exception for you.

My apologies to such a dedicated fan for my misspellings.

    Enjoy

Love both, but have to give it to Vaughn. Saw him play at a bar back in the day, our table was right up against the stage, he walked right onto the table and played his fingers off. Amazing! Miss him and his talent.

Stevie was BRILLIANT in his version. Not taking away from how good Hendrix was, BUT COME ON!

SRV did a GREAT cover, but better than Jimi's original? I think not.
    R.I.P. to BOTH of them.

P.S. a REAL Jimi fan would know how to spell his freakin' NAME!

I only say this because Jimi (you spelled Jimi wrong!) created the original version. Since Jimi's time, new effects pedals have been introduced and digital recording has made the sound of the recording cleaner. Had Jimi lived, I believe he would have made even more amazing music.

Not only that, there is a wider education of different types of music that have influenced great guitarists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn. I love Stevie's version and believe it would make Jimi proud. Having said that, I've also seen Kenny Wayne Shepherd to a kick-ass version live of Voodoo Child (Noah Hunt on vocals): KWS is an amazing blues guitarist as well does not get nearly the attention he deserves.

I saw both live more than once. Vaughn is the far superior guitar player, overall, although they both did some good stuff.

I think that Hendrix was much the better player, and was a legend for his left handed playing and even playing with his teeth. Stevie was great as well and copied much of what Hendrix did.

I remember seeing him play it live. It was like watching a mystical moment with the stevie ray being the shaman. He had us all mesmerized. Nothing against Jimi, but Stevie Ray's version just rocks you to the core.

You must be a very fine guitar player then. I play, but I'd say I'd probably never say that Hendrix or Vaughn was a poser. As in Wayne's World, "I'm not worthy!"

I'm a broken record today since I replied this same way to another poster! Have you seen Kenny Wayne Shepherd play this song? I saw him to it live on more than one occasion. Noah Hunt is on the vocals here. Also as far as guitarists go, are you familiar with Joe Bonamassa. Definitely not overrated! I did cast my vote for Jimi though since the creativity behind any other artist's embellismenets can not be denied.
