Count von Count

Vun, two, three peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Sound familiar? You probably grew up watching Count von Count on "Sesame Street."

  2. Oscar the Grouch

    Oscar the Grouch

From his trash can home, Oscar has taught generations of kids that it's OK to be a little bit cranky.

  3. Cookie Monster

    Cookie Monster

"Me … want … COOKIE!" Most of us can relate to Cookie Monster's cravings, but since 2006, he has also enjoyed healthy snacks.

  4. Elmo

    Elmo

Elmo dates back to 1979, but today's little ones are still totally obsessed with him -- perhaps because he is meant to be precisely three-and-a-half years old.

  5. Bert and Ernie

    Bert and Ernie

Jokes aside, Ernie and Bert are best friends. Ernie has a weakness for eating cookies in bed, and Bert collects paper clips.

  6. Big Bird

    Big Bird

He may be more than 8 feet tall, but Big Bird was created to represent your average 6-year-old.

  7. Zoe

    Zoe

Zoe was introduced in 1993 to increase the number of strong female characters on "Sesame Street."

One, two, three peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Sound familiar? You probably grew up watching Count von Count on "Sesame Street" -- and you're probably sad to hear that Jerry Nelson, the voice behind the puppet, died last Thursday night at age 78, according to The Associated Press.

"Every description of his characters describes Jerry as well," "Sesame Street" executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente told the AP. "Silly, funny, vulnerable, passionate and musical, for sure. That voice of his was superb." She continued, "We're having a rough day on the Street."

Here's a little piece of trivia for you: The Count is a vampire modeled after Bela Lugosi's interpretation of Count Dracula (hence that famous laugh). Whether you ... want ... Cookie or prefer collecting paper clips, click through our slideshow and let us know: Who's your favorite "Sesame Street" character?

Some tributes I found, showing some of the many Muppets (not just Count von Count) that Jerry Nelson portrayed:

Plus this goodie, with the Big Three Muppeteers (including Jerry as well as Jim Henson and Frank Oz) done as Muppets themselves, using their normal voices:

Actually, my real favorite character is GROVER, but I wasn't offered that option. One of my all time favorite children's book is "There's a Monster at the end of this book".
there s a monster at the end of this book

This is tough. I love The Count too. But The Grouch is more my guy. And I like his trash can. I mean for a small can, it sure has a lot of rooms (and stuff) if you hear him talk. Hehehe.

Jerry also did the voice of Snuffelapagus. And several other Muppet characters, including Gobo Fraggle, Kermit’s nephew Robin, etc.

Bert and Ernie were the first gay couple i was ever introduced to. They had some issues to work through with Bert and his cynicism and Ernie and his laziness, but they loved each other enough to stay together and that value is some thing that so many straight couples could learn from in 2012.

Without a doubt, Grover is my all time favorite, but nobody ever remembers Super Grover, so I guess Oscar and his little orange worm, Slimey, are good too.

When I was a kid, we didn't have Elmo or Zoe. Prairie Dawn was my real favorite, but she isn't on this list. I could make a long list of Sesame Street characters I loved as a kid who aren't quite as popular but still wonderful.

The Count's voice was most enjoyable and I'd appreciated it for a long, long time when I was a little boy. Oscar the Grouch was second and not so much with Zoe's voice. R.I.P. Jerry Neslon, you will be missed and I know that your in a better place where your talent will be appreciated.
