VIDEO GAMES > Is 'Batman: Arkham City' Featuring Too Many Characters?

Batman: Arkham City,” one of the most anticipated video games of the year, is coming out October 18th. And it seems like at least once a week, developer Rocksteady announces another character that will be a part of Batman’s sure–to–be–best–selling sequel to 2009's “Batman: Arkham Asylum.”

Various websites, like The Escapist and IGN, have reported over the past few months the ever-expanding roster of Batman baddies to join the fray. While “Arkham Asylum” featured less than ten representatives of Batman’s rogues’ gallery, “Arkham City” has confirmed (to date) the Joker, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Victor Zsasz, Bane, Hugo Strange, Two–Face, the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Talia al Ghul, the Calendar Man, Solomon Grundy, and, most recently, expert marksman Deadshot.

Some gamers, while excited and not–so–patiently awaiting the release of the game, are a little apprehensive about the expanding cast. After all, if this was a film, fans would be up in arms that each character will not be getting their fare share of screen time.

What do you think? Is this too many characters for a video game or do we need even more members of the famed Batman Rogues Gallery?

Open-environment immersive video games do better by creating a "realistic" pseudo-world. Let's ask the reverse question - wouldn't it be strange if there were no reference to any of the super-criminals that populate Batman's landscape? After all, a game isn't a move.

I suppose the legitimate question here is whether they can pull off having that many characters *active* in the game. It's one thing if they're "out there" and another if they're interacting with the main character. You have some AI issues that would be pretty difficult to deal with if the villains are depicted in a reasonable way (read: interact with each other as well as "batman")....

It's a lot to chew, but if you're going to do a Batman game... I really think you have to go all-in or pick some other topic/theme.

NEED MORE CHARACTERS! Sorry, I just got a bit excited. Also, strange to have to give a yes-or-no response to an either-or question.

Video games can take a lot of time to finish. The more characters they add, the longer the game, and the more interesting it can be.

I think the amount of criminals is fine, however I would love it if you could actually kill enemy in this one...Not that they will allow that.

There should have been more in "Arkham Asylum". After all, it was supposed to be taking place in Arkham Asylum.

Not at all. Depending on how the in game story is developed it could absolutely work. Hell, the game has access to one of the best rogues gallery available, why shouldn't they make use of it?

With "Batman: Arkham Asylum", Rocksteady proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that they know what they're doing. It SOUNDS like a lot of villains, but spread over HOURS of gameplay, it won't seem like too much, IMHO.
Part one had The Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Bane, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Mr. Zsasz and Scarecrow, and it didn't seem crowded at all (although there were also quite an array of other characters). Arkham City is probably going to take longer to finish as well.
    I'm not worried.

it is alot of them but I wouldn't say too many, having all the villains in it seems like an interesting game cause it seems like it will be a long game, and most gamers can appreciate a long game for the money that was paid for, I would sure as helll get it but my money is going on Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 then Ghost Recon Future soldier, but I would love to play this new batman game

I've never heard of someone complaining over an excess of variety in a video game.
Oh wait, yes I have. Some gamers are just impossible to please.

More characters just means the game will be longer and there will be more to do. I can't see how this is a bad thing.

I think 20-25+ hours of gameplay is more than enough to give 14 or so villains their "fair share" of time.

First off, a movie is maybe 3 hours tops. Even some of the absolute shortest games out there are at least twice that, and realistically, a game will probably be about 8 times as long as a movie. There's plenty of room. Secondly, a large number of characters doesn't mean that all will be represented equally. The first game, for example, is filled with Joker and Harley, naturally, but Bane is sort of a minor plot point, Scarecrow is a side plot, Riddler is inconsequential to the plot, and you get tiny references to people like Clayface, Calendar Man, Penguin, Catwoman, and many, many others. Plenty of these characters will be drawn upon to flesh out the Batman mythos, filled with characters that are acting as cats paws, pawns, and short action scenes. Too many characters can be a detriment, but it doesn't have to be, and Batman is a natural avenue for including such a large cast.

The landscape of Arkham City is twice the size of Arkham Asylum, so it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to think that different characters have their own territories within Gothem City.

    It's a video game, not a movie.

There will be secondary characters obviously, and the primary ones, (like the Joker obviously). But it's a game, if you sat there just fighting the same villain over the course of a whole game that sould be kinda boring. At least as a super hero game.

Also, Killer Croc should be in it, there's a cutscene in Asylum where a crate of venom is in the lake and killer croc's arm reaches up and grabs it, so I'm hoping to see him as a boss character.
