Usher Gets Primary Custody of His Sons: Should More Dads Get Custody of Their Kids?

It's not often that you hear about dads winning custody of their kids, but Usher was awarded primary physical custody of his two sons on Friday after a heated battle with his ex-wife, The Associated Press reports.

Usher

The R & B star, 33, will have primary custody of 4-year-old Usher Raymond V and 3-year-old Naviyd Ely Raymond. His ex-wife, Tameka Foster Raymond, will have joint legal custody. Usher and Tameka married in 2007 and divorced two years later. In May, Usher testified that Tameka spit at and tried to fight with his girlfriend during one visit and that she hit him during the dispute, the AP reports. Tameka Raymond's attorney said Usher provoked her client.

It's unlikely that we'll ever really know what went down in Usher's marriage and divorce -- and who would make the better primary parent. But assuming that Usher is the better primary parent, should he get custody? Or should custody go to moms in most cases?

If they are the better parent in the court's opinion then yes.

Too often courts decided on the mother's side only to have it end in disaster because they were afraid to break the status quo.

If she married him and had two children to ensure her financial future, then he is the more fit parent.

Some of the mothers only want to use the children for spite. Sometimes the father is the better choice.

I think the decision should be based on who can be the better, more stable parent and not their sex.

There are plenty of dad's out there who are MUCH better parents than the mothers but the Judge just automatically gives custody to the women. In fact one of my relatives, who is a pill head, pot head, and sleeps all day got custody of her kids over her husband who works and is a good guy.

with all due respect to women, and with no intention of being offensive, but it´s time for that law to be more equitative.... A lot of women take advantage of it.... some of us can be really good parents... I know I would...

Since so many "DADS" do a lousy job of standing at the head of families and raising kids, those that want to be counted should be allowed to do so.

If joint custody is completely out of the question, than the parent who is more likely to provide a more stable and loving home should gain custody, not just mom.

More men should, as long as they are qualified and the better parent. FAR too often the courts pick one instead of Joint Custody, and FAR too often the courts pick the woman. In the modern era of equality in the workplace and expectations that dads will participate more in a home, each case needs to be looked at on its own merit, assuming Joint Custody will work best and - if not - which parent is better suited for the job as primary care giver.

Which ever parent is fitter to raise the child should get it. I've heard of cases where the mother was really unfit and even menally unstable and not at all equipped to rasie a child get the child over the father just because she was the mother.

People tend to forget that it takes two to make a child and fathers do have a personal attachment to their child and are not just there to help the mother out financially and then get pushed aside.

It depends on which is the most stable and responsible. I do however believe that girls benefit more when raised by their mother. An boys benefit more when raised by their father. But again, it all depends on what kind of a person mother and father are.

The better parent should. My father raised me and my sister after my mother left when I was 11, actually he was raising us pretty much from the time I turned 7 and my mom became an unpredictable alcoholic/drug abuser.

I've been a Single Father for 7 years now....I don't regret it for a second, even when things get tough.

and yes its true, no matter what anyone says its been a very uneven playing field when it comes to who has more rights as a parent.. Mother's have had the law on their side a vast majority of the time. But, things are becoming more and more level all the time.

also... any dad's out there looking for advice, discussions, or someone to game with whose also a father, check out: Http://daddyplace.com it's a community for fathers, fathers-to-be, only...

Absolutely, positively yes! There are many, many men that I know in life who should have custody of their children but because the law automatically favors women in these situations, the Dads get screwed (and not in a good way) all the time! Fathers have just as many rights as Mothers do & more men should have legal help available to them for a fraction of the cost, since they don't have the funds to pay for a lawyer to even fight for their kids.

If the dad is the better parent of the two; in the interest of the children, he should get custody.

For some reason more and more women are going through mid life crisis's then men these days. My sister in law is going through her MC and my brother got custody of his two kids as are a lot of other men.

Mid life crisis used to be primarily and man thing but thats not the case any more.

I feel like courts sometimes just throw kids to the mother to get things over with and never check to see if the father might be a better fit.

guys automatically look like the bad guy in a divorce when thats far from the case. there are some sad excuses of women out there and are better off with their father when it comes to divorce. i dont understand why the woman usually gets custody.

Just because most judges are more sympathetic to mothers doesn't mean that they're always fit to be one. Sometimes placing the child with his father is the better option.

And if it's at all possible, joint custody should also be considered.

Yes,I feel that if the father is a responsible parent, they should share custody of the children. Since the divorce ended on a bad note maybe it's best for "Usher" and the children. Congratulations "Usher"!!
