Tupac Performs at Coachella as Hologram: Epic or Bizarre?

The Japanese have been touring holographic pop stars for years now, but it's still a relatively odd idea in America. But Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg might have found a way to break it into the mainstream. The hip-hop duo played a hologram of the late Tupac Shakur performing "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" during their Coachella set on Sunday, and it looked unbelievably real.

Nick Smith, president of the company that created the hologram, said, "We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to life. It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life." He wasn't allowed to get into the details, but hinted, "You can take [someone's] likenesses and voice and ... take people that haven't done concerts before or perform music they haven't sung and digitally recreate it." That would explain how they got Tupac to say, "What up, Coachella?" Watch the entire performance here.

Right now I have changed genders temporarily. Instead of squealing like the girl I'm supposed to be, I'm going to react like a male.

"Woah. Dude. Bro. Like, dude. Woah."

I watched it live on the stream. I'll be the first to admit that, at the start I thought it was a bit creepy. But then when he started rapping it was incredible. The mechanics of what was going on were truly astounding. Well done to them. Snoop and Dre killed it as well, superb performance.

Isn't he dead? He keeps coming out with CDs and now is in concert?
If this becomes a trend...I don't know. lol

I guess if he is dead it cannot be humilitated by stupid things like this and if people want this and he does not have anyone looking out for him, I guess it is cool.
I wont ever understand people and am pretty sure I do not ever want to understand them.

25 years since Dr Dre made his debut with N.W.A. Still he managed to pull off a headline slot at 70+ thousand capacity festival. I think that speaks for itself.

I think at this stage of his career, it would be pointless to criticize him for trying to stage a comeback.

He isn't dead, people. How else are you going to get a full head-to-toe perfect video of him? Not to mention a dozen more rap videos and an entire movie. He even told everyone he was going to fake his death before he did so.

    It's either
    a) CGI
or B) Taken from video of one of his concerts. He doesn't have to be alive for them to do this. Hell, they could make a holographic speech giving Hitler if they wanted to.

But this is very clearly not an actual image of him. It is computer generated.
  • Cal Vitalani 2012/04/16 21:46:54

You can easily tell. Watch his feet. They slide on the stage like he's floating, it's like they over estimated how far his feet should slide on the stage when taking a step. Almost moonwalk like if you watch it.
