Tupac Performs at Coachella as Hologram: Epic or Bizarre?

The Japanese have been touring holographic pop stars for years now, but it's still a relatively odd idea in America. But Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg might have found a way to break it into the mainstream. The hip-hop duo played a hologram of the late Tupac Shakur performing "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" during their Coachella set on Sunday, and it looked unbelievably real.

Nick Smith, president of the company that created the hologram, said, "We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to life. It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life." He wasn't allowed to get into the details, but hinted, "You can take [someone's] likenesses and voice and ... take people that haven't done concerts before or perform music they haven't sung and digitally recreate it." That would explain how they got Tupac to say, "What up, Coachella?" Watch the entire performance here.

I think we would have to have video and recordings of them...and a lot of money.

I would NOT pay money to see a holographic concert. If I go to a concert, I want to see the real person, not some stupid holograph. I might as well stay home and watch a 3-D video, and even that does not appeal to me.

One of the greatest rappers of all time...but let the man rest already! My goodness!
  • Casey 2012/04/18 00:26:19
Was he really talented enough to be "kept alive" like he has been? It's freaking weird. You don't see the rockers doing this stuff with Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Freddy Mercury, etc. It's just weird...and lazy.
  • fluffy Casey 2012/04/18 01:00:49
Its just weird and lazy that took a lot of work to much to be lazy
  • Tre Casey 2012/04/18 11:20:55
Yeah, he was very talented. Arguably the best rap performer ever. Rockers maybe aren't doing it because they can't think outside of the box. I think it was a great idea by Dr. Dre and was a success.

At least they were talented. Too packed did what? Get killed in a bicoastal thug war that resulted in far too few casualties?

Why? The guy is dead, why do this? A cheap trick that dishonors him and his family for a "show"? Dumb, de, dumb, dumb!!!!!
  • Cra*Chr... El Prez 2012/04/19 00:25:13
Supposedly, Dre got permission from Afeni Shakur (Tupac's mom) and he donated to Tupac's charity, on top of dishing out cash for the production of the hologram.

That, if true. makes it a little better but it is still a cheap trick. Aren't there some young people who needed a shot? This guy, however loved he may have been, is a former rapper, he is no more, deceased, gone and no longer with us. Some of the newbys might be as great, if given a chance.

Bring back Jim Morrison or Michael Hutchence and maybe I will change my mind, but it's kind of weird.

Please don't bring back Jim Morrison!!!!!!

I only say this because I never would have had a chance to see "The Doors" live as they were and as they are my second favourite group ever, I would be very curious if they did it to see that show. But ONLY if it was all of the Doors. Same with INXS. I was only lucky enough to see 3 songs live once.

That's theone reason these shows might be worthwhile, so those who want to see these acts would get a chance. However, there are films and tapes. However, all the families or the people themselves whould have to clear it.

    I gotta admit, it's badass.

This is creepy as hell, it's like a ghost, but also VERY amazing. I can't believe how real it looks, I almost think that Tupac is actually there and pretended to be dead. I hope they do Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and others, I'd pay a lot to see that!
  • Tennessee3501 2012/04/17 21:33:57

Tupac was an azzhole. Problem with all these thugs, is that they try anything to make money so they can get out of the getto, crime, etc. If they finaly succeed, they are so F-ed up by what they had to become to get out, that they take thier own little protable geto with them where ever they go, kinda like a fish who needs his fish bowl. I know, i was raised poor in the same kinda place. pulled in 105k last year, 2 new cars, all from 100% work. DON'T follow tupac, he got killed because he was an azzhole. found out he wasn't made of iron after all. Stay in school, pick up a skill.

I wouldn't want to pay to see a dead celebrity. The novelty will wear off of the whole hologram ripoff.
    Bizarre, definitely.

The world has gone so long without a actual figure of decent and unbridled, untrammeled
looks on life that it was exciting to see Pac again; now if the suspicions that I have are true this aint the last time we see Tupac Amaru Dequan Shakur and all the real ol gees we out.............................
  • sdmbrian 2012/04/17 18:08:41
soon we wont need any live performers anymore, we just use holograms, what makes this stupid is that nobody cared about that thug when he was alive and nobody cares about him now.
  • drydenwest sdmbrian 2012/04/17 18:18:33
No body cares about you; you need to read up on ya information; he was idolized by millions and ya daughter probably got her cookies tossed because of a Tupac Song Hating ass maggot! But feel how you want to feel.........................
  • nando drydenwest 2012/04/17 18:55:34
