A blank is a type of cartridge for a firearm that contains gunpowder but no bullet or shot. When fired, the blank makes a flash and an explosive sound (report). Blanks are often used for simulation (such as in historical reenactments, theatre and movie special effects), training, and for signaling (see starting pistol). Blank cartridges differ from dummy cartridges, which are used for training or function testing firearms; these contain no primer or gunpowder, and are inert.

Jon-Erik Hexum killed himself when he was playing with a prop gun (loaded with blanks) for the TV show "Cover Up" back in 1984. Here's the scoop:

On October 12, 1984, in between filming scenes on the set of Cover Up, Hexum was critically wounded after he placed a .44 Magnum prop gun loaded with blanks to his temple and pulled the trigger. The accident happened during the filming of a scene where Hexum’s character (Mac Harper) was supposed to unload a handgun and replace the bullets with blanks – as the script required. However, the shooting was delayed and Hexum – being overworked and tired due to his tight filming schedule and various TV appearances[citation needed] – fell asleep. Hexum awoke, realizing that the scene still was not ready to be shot, and put the gun to his head. Of all the crewmembers in the studio that day, no one claims to have seen the shooting.

Hexum was apparently not informed that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled out of the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired within a few inches of the body, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexu...

Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain causing massive hemorrhaging.

Hexum was rushed to the Beverly Hills Medical Center where he underwent five hours of surgery to repair his wounds. On October 18, six days after the accident, Hexum was declared brain dead.

There was a TV actor back in the eighties that while on the set of his action series he held a revolver loaded with blanks to his temple. Upon pulling the trigger the muzzle report was strong enough to penetrate his skull and open a wound channel to his brain. The guy died later that day from the wound. but the biggest irony was he was an organ donor and they ended up giving his heart to a pimp.

True so called BLANKS can kill you. The closer you are to the muzzle of a gun the more damage they can do. Including killing you. Up close, the paper or wax wadding becomes the same thing as a bullet.

That kind of pressure, especially if at close range- can kill if it's toward the head, potentially fatal if it hits the right area in the mid section, critically dangerous to arms/legs but of course not fatal.
