"Top Gun"

Maverick, Iceman, Goose … 1986's megahit "Top Gun" is the best possible example of '80s cheese. And yes, we still watch it every time it's on TV.

Very sad news coming out of Hollywood: "Top Gun" director Tony Scott died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles bridge, authorities said -- and the death is being investigated as a suicide. The married father of two was 68 years old.

"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to police. A suicide note was later found at his office, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The director, who was born in England, was "Alien" director Ridley Scott's younger brother. Among his action-packed films, Scott directed "Days of Thunder," "Beverly Hills Cop II" and, most recently, "Unstoppable," starring Denzel Washington. He was married to actress Donna Scott, with whom he had twin sons.

I like them all. But the gay volleyball scene in "Top Gun" knocked it down my list.

A tragedy - though after hearing that he learned he had brain cancer, I can't really blame him for not wanting to suffer through that.

The dude had a inoperable brain tumor. I'd probably consider doing the same thing. It's so sad because he had such a great talent, now we mourn the loss of a great talent.

it's so sad how we can't celebrate the birth of talents but only mourn the lost ones.

    Wow.
    The guy was brilliant.
    Motive?
Was it a domestic thing, or drugs?
    Was he terminally ill?
    Very sad to hear it.

Watching you jump would been an even better one. I guess you weren't standing in line when they were handing out compassion. Maybe life hasn't treated you so well after being chosen the 2nd runner up for the Robert Goulet look-alike contest.

Maybe I was just really in the mood for a movie that night. But I was on the edge of my seat through most of it. A welcome change from the aliens and spys I normally go to see.

True Romance was far more interesting than any of these other more typical "Hollywood fare". Gary Oldman's brief but memorable performance was worth the price of admission.

Gary Oldman thinks that was his best bad guy character, and I agree.

But what about the jaw-dropping politically incorrect death scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper. One of the most powerful scenes in all of cinema history, I say.

Brad Pitt, Bronson Pinochet, Tom Sizemore, and Chris Penn also had great, almost "mini-movies" inside there, too. What a great ride that film is.

I am actually a big fan of his movie 'The Hunger.' It was a really cool vampire movie with David Bowie, Susan Sarandon and it even has Bauhaus signing Bela Lugosi is Dead in it. It doesn't get much better than that.

Great flying sequences and an "ok" script. Too bad things got so bad for him, in his mind, that he took such a drastic way to release himself.

He made that Quentin Tarantino's best movie. QT couldn't even top it himself. It stands the test of time better than any of the movies QT directed.
