The concept of making a Janis Joplin biopic has been kicked around for years now. But as of this morning, there’s a new version in the works starring Nina Arianda. Never heard of her? She’s not really a household name, unless your household happens to love theater. She’s actually a Tony-award winner for Best Actress in a Play for “Venus in Fur.” Now she’ll be donning tie-dye and bangles to play the gravelly-voiced rock star who died tragically at the age of 27.

But Arianda isn’t the first actress who’s been attached to the coveted role. In 2004, pop star Pink was set to take on the part. That version’s director, Penelope Spheeris, clearly figured the singer could connect with the character. Pink’s song “Unwind” was actually a tribute to her idol, Joplin. But Pink left the film and a mad search started for a suitable replacement.

Next, “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel beat out Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Scarlett Johansson for the part. The She & Him singer spent years trying to nail the Joplin’s signature voice, but she probably would have been too adorkable to pull it off. This version fell apart, too.

When director Fernando Meirelles took over the project, he made an unlikely casting choice: Amy Adams. True, she was known to sing in films like “Enchanted,” but it was hard to imagine her taking on the persona of the hard-drinking, psychedelic rock star. So going with a relatively unknown actress might be the best choice. Moviegoers will be able to watch the flick without any preconceived notions of the actress. What do you think: Who would play Janis Joplin the best?

My vote would be for Lily Taylor. She has that plain Jane sexiness that Janis had and I think she can sing. lily taylor

All the years of smoking cigarettes shows on Nina. I guess she is a good candidate for this role. Pink's personality may be a better fit, though.

Does anyone remember Crystal Bowersox? From Idols? I don't know if she can act, but her voice was eerily similar to Joplin's, she was truly brilliant. She also had a vague resemblance, slight though, but her manner was quite similar. Reminded me and awful lot of Joplin on the whole. She's who I would really pick. joplins brilliant vague resemblance slight manner reminded awful joplin shes

I think Pink would be a better choice vocally but she'd have to ruin her voice to do Janis. None of the women listed here look anything like Janis. Janis was hoarse, crude and sadly very homely. She had no grace or presence and it had an affect on her health. They'll have a hard time in makeup. It's pretty tough to play someone dying that young of self loathing, alcoholism and drugs. It helps if you don't start out as vibrant and pretty as the actresses listed here.

Pink, hands down! Pink has that ruffness to her and Janis Joplin wasn't no push over. Janis was "Hot' in her day,it was a sad day when the news came out about her death. People are still talking about her, she left her "Mark" on many people. R.I.P. Janis and I know you are "Rocking" heaven!

Not one of them. It would be hard to find someone to do Janis. There was a girl on AI who may be able to fit the bill but i can't remember her name. Bette Midler was as close as they come in the movie the Rose.

None of these can hold a candle to Pearl. At least Pink can sing, sort of. Who is this Nina Arianda?

Here's a girl I think is better than all these, she's basically unknown but look and listen to Amanda Waggener

Yeah, like I said - to get the Janis sound you have to smoke 2 packs of cigs a day, do 3-4 bowls of pot/day, and drink yourself unconscious at least twice a week. That's how Janis did it. It's also how she died so young. No one ought to do what it took to get that Janis gravel voice. It was the sound of the symptoms of death by drugs and exhaustion.

Wow. I agree. She could do Janis easily. She resembles her, she's got a similar look and rock. Now all she needs to do is smoke 2 packs of cigarettes/day, do 3-4 bowls of weed and drink until she passes out at least twice a week and she'll develop the whole package in no time. Unfortunately it will do the same things to her as it did to Janis. They'll make millions off the movie and she'll ruin her voice and health permanently. Better thought - leave her alone.

You forgot the pills, the pills, lol and the sex.

I think she can be taught to act the part, you know not live the part. I ran into her by accident looking for another obscure female singer.

I don't think Janis ever lost her voice, smoke and all, her voice matured like everyone else's in that time and prior to that time. Remember, there were cigarette commercials and bill boards back then. It was a different culture then.

It's amazing so many people and rockers survived those years.

Out of those four, sure, BUT I would love to see Dana Fusch play her. She does not look like her exactly, but she has the voice, and the persona. She was in Across the universe, and she can act!! A little prosthetics, and it would be awesome. Janis needs someone worthy of her to play her part!

Yeah, she could definitely pull it off. Altering looks is easy compared to sounding like Janis.

Update: Dana has already played the singing Janis in the Eric Nederlander production of Randall Myler's off Broadway musical Love, Janis.

No offense meant, but Janis, being one of my all time favorites, was seriously barking when it came to looks. Where do you go to find unflattering make up? If I'm not mistaken, didn't Bette Middler, I'm not sure anymore, do the Rose? Te actress did that very well.

If you read her biography, she was an incredibly vulnerable, sweet person who came off as tough and was very confused.

i think pink would be a good choice she's knarley, she's certainley boardeline wildside i think she's got the attitude needed, feistey, upfront in your grill and just does not give a @u**; yeah pink would get my vote, but i do know of nina and her work, but i think she's just not knarley enough, but not being down on her, her pesona is just too innocent, clean and friendley, but i will look foward to seeing the outcome so hope she does good and does the memory of joplin good as i am a fan of her sound

Melissa Ethridge. She's got the Janis pipes. She did a tribute to Janis recently,in front of Janis's family. They clapped with approval.Plus Melissa has the mannerism of Janis down pat.And their bodies are about the same. And I leave near where Janis was from . Melissa Ethridge

Mostly because you can't be attractive or very thin to play Janis accurately. It's like they intend to put whoever doesn't look like them in roles in Hollywood these days.
