Record exec Tommy Mottola has written his memoir, “Hitmaker.” In the book, he says that his ex-wife Mariah Carey would be nothing without him. Carey has repeatedly charged that during their four-year marriage, Mottola was controlling and that he emotionally abused her.
The two met when the “American Idol” judge was just 23 years old and Mottola was in his forties. They began having an affair until he divorced his wife and the mother of his two kids. She rose to stardom under his tutelage, selling 15 million copies of her first release. But after years of what she called “a private hell,” the couple divorced in 1997.
In his book Mottola writes, “If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success." He acknowledges that she came to the partnership with the talent. He says, "That may be the best voice you've ever heard in your life!" But he maintains that it was because he didn’t let her take a break that she became the star she is today. What do you think? Would Mariah Carey be famous without Tommy Mottola?
