After more than five years of marriage, superstar couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are filing for divorce. While Cruise, 49, is no stranger to divorce -- this will be his third after Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman -- Holmes, 33, will be losing her first marriage. The couple has one kid together, 6-year-old Suri Cruise.

Holmes' attorney told People, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." No other information is available, and they'd probably like to keep it that way. It's kind of amazing they were able to avoid break-up rumors for this long. But we're sure some more details will come to light. Are you surprised about the Katie Homes / Tom Cruise split? Or do you think it's a part of the gig when you become a celeb?

    Nope. More money, more choices.

Besides, I'm still waiting for Tom Cruise to get together with John Travolta. I think they'd make a great couple.

Depends. The couples that last long are the ones that choose to stay out of the spotlight. But when they try to stay in limelight 24/7 it's harder.

Wow! I did not know this. Katie is from the town next to mine. She comes from a lovely family and it would be my guess they are celebrating this break up. I've heard they never were too pleased with that marriage and I can't say as I blame them.

Busy lives, rumours, etc all make celebrity relationships harder.

Probably, having never been a celeb =), I can imagine that the pressures of being a "role model" added to the normal pressures of any interpersonal relationship, much less one so intimate would be at the very least difficult.

I don't know many celebs who would be very comfortable being a "role model".

I think he gets rid of them before they can cost him too much in a divorce and she is probably sick and tired of being a single parent while he makes movies and prevents her from taking any decent roles cause it would require the child to travel, or him to NOT be the super star.

One more time a man gets over. Eats up the gals youth and star power, then spits her out.

Celebrities are married to the adoring public first, then to their careers second, and finally to whomever they have chosen as their "spouse" third. Celebs trade off their private lives for their time in the spotlight. When you live your life trying to make everybody happy, you are also dividing your attention, taking away from your family life as a part of the "deal". With all the celeb divorces over the years, it's a wonder they still get married at all.

So heterosexual couples like these can run through marriages like dirty underwear, but gay people still can't get married? Hmmm....

That is not a gurantee...and I do not agree with any of the nastiness, BUT despite sexual orientation it does not give either a realtionship a better chance at sucess!!!

Never said that. But why not allow gays the same right to run through a marriage in the same way. I made my original comment to illustrate that more heterosexual couples are ruining the "sanctity of marriage" than their gay counterparts.
  • smitty Kennard 2012/07/06 17:23:24
    smitty
First of all it must be a right. I don't think it is a right to get married. If you believe it is for a man and woman to get married and raise kids (the way humans have developed over the years require male semen and a womans egg to produce offspring - just like ever other mammal on our plant) then you have that.

Now if you believe a male/male and female/female should be married the same as male/female.. then there is no reproduction of offspring like others mammals on our planet. So it really can't be the same.

I understand why you did it. But the way you said made it seem like homosexual couples would somehow be different in that sanctity.

Look you want to change it go for it. I can respect that. Just respect my stance as well even though it differs from yours.
  • Kennard smitty 2012/07/07 04:54:18
    Kennard
Well sir/madam that would all rely heavily on the notion that marriage was created as an institution to create offspring. The fact is, it wasn't. So there falls that argument.

My heterosexual cousin just got married to the love of her life. However, because of a life-long condition, she can't genetically bear children. I wonder if I should call her and ask if she'd like me to call her marriage anything other than a marriage. To my poor cousin's dimsay, her husband's semen and her egg will never produce offspring.

    Marriage annulled.
