After more than five years of marriage, superstar couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are filing for divorce. While Cruise, 49, is no stranger to divorce -- this will be his third after Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman -- Holmes, 33, will be losing her first marriage. The couple has one kid together, 6-year-old Suri Cruise.

Holmes' attorney told People, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." No other information is available, and they'd probably like to keep it that way. It's kind of amazing they were able to avoid break-up rumors for this long. But we're sure some more details will come to light. Are you surprised about the Katie Homes / Tom Cruise split? Or do you think it's a part of the gig when you become a celeb?

    Nope. More money, more choices.

Besides, I'm still waiting for Tom Cruise to get together with John Travolta. I think they'd make a great couple.

They are hotter, have more money and go to more parties...of course it would be harder for them to stay together.

Mr. Cruise is a head case. In comparison to Mr. Cruise, Katie is too normal for him.

John and Kelly are splitting up now? I hadn't heard that. I am surprised about the news that's out about him and the claims from those massage guys.

That paper is trash which is why I never buy it. Many celebrities have sued them but that filth keeps on printing garbage.

Did you check out the John Edwards story? They helped scanalize him and his mistress. By the way we are almost neighbors. I use to live in Imperial Beach and now I'm in San Diego.

I saw something about this guy but didn't care to read. If he's into politics then that isn't my area. Isn't he a Governor?
Ahhh, I like areas of I.B.
First time I am actually meeting someone from my city! Thats cool!
Isn't it crazy down there with high traffic and the one way streets?

No not Govenor...a former Senator from North Carolina and a candidate several times for president on the democratic ticket. Once he was the nominee for VP with Kerry against Bush in 2004. I haven't lived in IB for many years. I have one son born in Coronado, one in Chula Vista, one in balboa Naval Hospital and a 4th son born in Virginia Beach, vA.

It's a lot of pressure, a lot of scrutiny, a lot less privacy, etc. All of those add strain to a relationship. On top of that you have the Hollywood acceptance of divorces.

Are you kidding me, no it's not harder. They have plenty of money, a ton of fun things to do (thus things stay exciting), and let's face it, both are usually pretty good looking. If only they had the normal people's problems.

What's hard to do is for an attractive 33 year old women to stay married to a weirdo control freak that is 16 years older than her.

Their failures are more public, and the media pays no attention to the celebs who have longstanding marriages.

In general over 55% of marriages end in divorce within the first 5 years. I doubt that celebs are any worse or better.

Several sources. Interestingly, statistics can be misleading as the divorce rate appears to be going down? Why? The large increase in couples living together unmarried has been rising steadily. When they break up, it is not included in the divorce statistics.

The government incentivizes people to not marry. There is the Marriage Penalty for Income Tax, discrepancy under the ACT (Obamacare), and the difference in Welfare Benefits. Medicaid, etc. (so now over 40% of first babies are born to unwed mothers).

Seniors are divorcing prior to filing for Social Security Benefits as they receive more as 2 single people than as a married couple. They stay together, but not legally married. Single Seniors are also opting to live together rather than marry and lose on Social Security Benefits. (Some churches perform marriage ceremonies before God, but not legal marriage by the States).

Second marriages have an even higher divorce rate and third marriages even higher still. Just check the US Bureau of Census and of Vital Statistics. It's all there.

I know that it happens in the best of families. I didn't mean to imply that there was something totally bizzare about divorce. We have one son that has been divorced twice and another has one divorce. We even have a grandson divorced twice. Perhaps we were not the complete role model.

No,it's not hard for anyone to stay married, marriage is a work in progress! You will always have to work on your marriage because it's two different personalities who are trying to live together and need to compromise with one another. When you are so use to doing things your way sometimes it's hard to change. If you really love that person you will change and accept them flaws and all. Tom Cruise is a very controlling man,I'm surprised Katie stay that long!

I guess Holmes was just so embarrassed from Cruise's performance in Rock of Ages that she couldn't take him anymore. Either that, or she caught Cruise with another man.

For one.. there is always a girl younger then the girl the guy already has, that he wants in his bed. So that is going to cause a problem.

Then you have the competition thing when both partners are celebs.

They should have some sort of Temporary Marriage Agreement.... :)
