TLC's New Show 'High School Moms' Premieres Sunday: Should Pregnant Teen Reality Shows Be Banned?

First there was "16 and Pregnant"... then there was "Teen Mom"... now, there's "High School Moms." TLC's new six-part series on -- you guessed it -- teen pregnancy will debut Sunday and it will follow teenagers at Denver's Florence Crittenton High School as they cope with pregnancy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What a unique reality show idea!

high school moms

According to the official description of the show on the TLC website, "'High School Moms' follows the real-life drama at a Colorado high school devoted exclusively to pregnant girls and teen moms. Every day brings new challenges to the school’s dedicated teachers and students, as the girls try to balance schoolwork, sonograms, diapers and dreams of a bright future."

We're glad these girls are getting the support they need, but do shows like these glamorize teen pregnancy? Or do they actually DETER teens from getting pregnant? We're about ready to make the claim that they should all get off the air -- for good!

But this is where the disgusting TV networks have taken us. They can be stopped by not watching the shows or calling and threatening to boycott the advertisers products.

The glorification of babies having babies is getting out of control. I find it ironic that people who shouldn't have kids pop them out like rabbits, while educated and stable adults run into issues trying to conceive.

"Get them off the air," isn't that banning them? Just do like I do, don't watch them.

Here's the problem. "Banning" is indeed a violation of our First Amendment rights, but the preservation of civilized society ought to be a right too. Targeting the advertisers is a good strategy - but speaking out against unwed pregnancies - and all the lewd behavior that engenders them - is an obligation.

Go after the down-at-the-crotch pants, the obscene, disrespectful song lyrics - and those wretched disrespect-women sex-laden movies/videos. Recognize child making as a serious responsibility. Girls who get pregnant out of wedlock cannot be given their own apartment! With their own food stamps. And too much freedom. We should set up "orphanages" for them and their children. No boyfriends living in. The mothers HAVE to finish school, attend baby care classes, and be put on birth control.

The problem is not so much the shows as it is the glorification of the life style. And, the burden it puts on the rest of society.

I am a strong Conservative and I can't agree with you on this. If the idiots want to watch this nonsense, it is their right. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

Whoa! I didn't say that we violate our first amendment right; simply that there ought to be a stronger voice AGAINST irresponsible, destructive (sinful) behavior.

Don't you - as a strong conservative - wonder why the owners of the stations that produce and so strongly advertise such programs - and in fact glorify such sad lifestyles - define themselves also as strong conservatives?
  • Ken The NJ ... 2012/09/02 17:59:57

I don't know of many in the entertainment or media industry who consider themselves Conservatives. I do my part by turning off this nonsense and not buying from the advertisers who support them.

I'm amazed that a SodaHead author would actually create a post that doesn't give an undecided option.

Should they be off the air? Yes. Should they be banned? No way! Anyone who thinks that there's no issue with banning these shows needs to learn a thing or two about freedom of speech. If you don't like the show then don't watch it; if you don't want your kids watching the show then don't let them!

Unfortunately the fact that these types of shows are doing so well is just an indicator of the sad reality of the times. This is the type of culture that has developed over the last few decades.

If it shows the warts and all truth of being a teenage mum in school, then it could do some good as it might actually show the teenagers that being a mum isn't all just cute and wonderful - it's little sleep, guys suddenly ignoring you, friends being awkward, financially challenging, destroyer of your social life, not enough hours in the day and a very real possibility that every single plan you had for your life need to be postponed by several years. Maybe then it could open a few teenage eyes.

As long as they can depict accurately how hard it is to have a child of their own and that their life as a free teen who can socialise with friends and go to parties is over.

If young people can get a reality of how difficult being a single parent really is, maybe it will encourage them to make responsible choices...?

These shows are despicable. The people who produce these shows are human garbage. Willful exploitation of the idiots in the United States who lust for this type of attention, regardless of how pathetic the means of acquiring it are. This is something people should be ASHAMED OF. Period. If you're in high-school and pregnant A) The Parents should probably be horsewhipped and B) You're a little idiot. Congratulations, your blatant moronic irresponsibility just ruined your shot at a normal flowing, prosperous life. Not to mention that the taxpayers are probably paying for your medical bills and other government assistance. Also, society at large will most likely be paying for years to come due to the fact that NO TEENAGER has the wisdom and life skills to properly raise a child. Here all these kids think they're SO grown up and they DON'T HAVE A CLUE. Listen kids, BE RESPONSIBLE! That little 1-3 minute tryst is not worth a lifetime struggle and arguing over child support and custody. You NEED time and experience to gain life skills and get your life all set up in order to be able to PROPERLY raise a child. You don't deserve a hole to dig out of and that little life doesn't deserve to be brought into chaos and confusion. And your parents certainly DO NOT need the added responsibility and headaches. Chances are they've had quite the share from you.

First off, I don't think this show or others like it are "ok" or helpful... to anyone.

BUT... I don't believe in banning: books, tv shows, talk-radio, radio, etc...

If you don't like it, don't watch it, worried about your kids seeing it? Try parenting. Now I realize access to shows like this can be easy and you can't control at all times what your kids watch, but you could try instilling values that would help in deterring them from watching crap like this.

OR you could simply not subscribe to cable, dish... whatever. It's not easy to do but the other hand, if you don't know what's on, or don't watch it, you'll never know what you're missing. Is that such a bad thing?

This is a good post. Banning really isn't effective. But, unfortunately, kids who get pregnant and then HAVE the baby did not listen to their parents - or any of the other responsible adults in their lives. And, even the best parents have kids who are influenced more by the culture of their school, their friends, and/or the media.

Putting these kinds of shows on TV implies that this is an acceptable life style. Look at those Jerry Springer shows! Suddenly, "everybody else does it" pops up.

Target the advertisers. The filth will still get on the internet, but at least not on TV.

Of course cons vote to ban something they don't like.

Also, the answers are bias. Just because I don't want it banned does not think I think it will help teens.

These damn liberals and their "thought guns"! How dare they try to control how and when I pray. And to ban public speak as well... tisk tisk...oh wait, that didn't actually happen... What you are referring to is bans on our tax money supporting a particular religion and the banning of teaching kids from kinder garden age to worship the flag every morning before starting work at a government ran school...

I do not believe their is a law anywhere prohibiting you from personal prayer or personally saying the pledge of allegiance. If you want to do those things you have ever right to.

    http://www.ifc.com/wkuk/video...

As far as capitalism and keeping the money you earn... I'll agree with you there, I hate liberals and conservatives :)
  • Ken Freedom... 2012/08/11 04:10:19

Since the 1960s the liberals and the ACLU have been trying to take "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance, voluntary prayer out of any Government facility, the Ten Commandments out of any Government property, pre-game/post-game prayers from athletic events and crosses out of wherever they appear. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, but the attacks are constant.

It is not suppose to be there. 10 commandment on public land with tax money is illegal, SCHOOL led prayer is also illegal.

Show me in the Constitution where it says that and why the Government has always had religion in its buildings and schools?
  • America... Ken 2012/08/18 11:49:53

The separation of church and state. There wasn't always religion on government buildings.
  • Ken America... 2012/08/18 16:14:51 (edited)
    Ken
Seperation of Church and State refers to the Church or Churches running the Government or edicting to the Government how to run the Government. Stopping what used to be done in the Old World or is currently done in most Muslim countries. Iran being an excellent example. No where is there a reference in the Constitution to not permit religious reference in public buildings. Being that religious basics (not of any one religion) were used to develop our Constitution.
