TLC's New Show 'High School Moms' Premieres Sunday: Should Pregnant Teen Reality Shows Be Banned?

First there was "16 and Pregnant"... then there was "Teen Mom"... now, there's "High School Moms." TLC's new six-part series on -- you guessed it -- teen pregnancy will debut Sunday and it will follow teenagers at Denver's Florence Crittenton High School as they cope with pregnancy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What a unique reality show idea!

high school moms

According to the official description of the show on the TLC website, "'High School Moms' follows the real-life drama at a Colorado high school devoted exclusively to pregnant girls and teen moms. Every day brings new challenges to the school’s dedicated teachers and students, as the girls try to balance schoolwork, sonograms, diapers and dreams of a bright future."

We're glad these girls are getting the support they need, but do shows like these glamorize teen pregnancy? Or do they actually DETER teens from getting pregnant? We're about ready to make the claim that they should all get off the air -- for good!

Firstly, I still believe in freedom of speech! & People are going to watch what they want... if people don't watch... show is off! THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!

Hey, I work in the film industry... more American jobs, keep U.S. money in the U.S. More education & income for those teen moms... less welfare tax dollars paid.

Banning something doesn't get rid of the problem. If you choose to watch these shows, as a parent, you should also be having discussions with your teenager about the reality of having a baby. (And having a baby in the house doesn't hurt either, the perks of having my son 10 years after my daughters.) My teenage girls regularly remark about "how stupid those girls are" for having sex and getting pregnant before they were ready to shoulder that type of commitment and responsibility. The best way to educate your child is to be involved in their lives and not allow discomfort or your own hangups to keep you from talking about the important stuff. Don't let the TV teach them about life... I don't like those programs, personally, and prefer not to watch 'reality shows' at all.

I say ban them. These tv shows are making these teen girls feel like oh well if I get pregnant it won't be hard because they are seeing these shows where they make it seem like being a pregnant teen isn't a big deal. I understand they are trying to show the world that not all teen moms are low life's and that some graduate high school. But still there shouldn't air shows like this then teens think its cool to have a baby and it's not.

Everyone makes mistakes. A child is very precious and a child shouldn't be trying to raise a child most of the time she will be alone. Trying to do the best she knows how and the child is the looser. So we need to teach the girls and THE BOYS about having babies. I'm the Mama of three
boys and I only have 1 grandson. Parents talk to your children. WE need parents more involved in the children's lives not learning everything off of the television set.

I agree. When they watch these tv shows they' think that will never be me. But it can happen to anybody (except boys) we need to talk to our children ourselves instead of having a tv show showing them.

I think they glamorize teen pregnancy. The teens think "hey I can be on TV if I get pregnant" Really though they show some aspects but not all of what teens go through as a teen parent.

Doesn't SH get tired of manipulating polls (and people) to get the results they desire??

I don't think there's more than maybe a handful of people that would actually try to use the government to shut down a program like this. But I'm sure plenty would think that it's social conditioning, actually promoting and glamorizing teen promiscuity/irresponsibility.

Perhaps more would say they're sick of reality shows, a million different spin-offs, some would probably write the studio to express their dislike of the idea. Or is this Chicl-fil-A /Starbucks divisiveness, trying to catch conservatives with their pants down, that there might not be products among the trillions that they're giving money to?

Ban? TLC "bans" itself. Come on, people, can we stop trying to instigate fights?

I don't think young unweds should be shunned, but I don't think their impending motherhood should be celebrated, recognized, or otherwise publicized, except as an example of how to royally screw up your life, your kid's, and probably saddle your parent with a new, expensive burden. The vast majority of these poor kids will have substandard jobs, missed opportunities for more education, and minimal time to spend with their poor babies who need them. Parents need to swallow their pride and sanctimoniousness and educate their kids -- girls AND boys -- about birth control early and help them obtain it. As Bill Cosby so wisely told his daughters, "I don't want you to do IT, but if you do IT and you do not use IT, you will have IT, and I don't want IT."

young girls during pregnancy are slight ignorance according to the decision-making self-interest among the parents council. But on the other hand, if the parents agree that child care, and the girl can continue to study. Believe only good mothers, are supporting the family. Do not go off the record the mother until the time you do not understand.

The sad fact of the matter is that no matter how much effort is put into discouraging teen pregnancies, there will always be some people who just don't get it at all. So I think these types of shows actually show how life can be so much more difficult and stressfull as a teen parent. And for all of those who still plan on having a baby early, these shows would open their eyes to the truth.

I have not seen the shows on television so I cannot say. I do, however, read the newsletter from Focus Adolescent Services, www.Focusas.com They know a lot about this subject it seems. They maintain a national help line, ( not hot-line). This appears to be more complicated than I first thought. Many girls want a baby in order to keep their boy friend, some want a baby because their best friend had one, and so on go the many reasons. Naturally the burden, as has been stated in these pages, falls on the new grand parents. Just when you thought television could not get worse, some jerk dreams up another off-the-wall concept.

While I think they are honest about teen pregnancies, girls seem to be fearing them less and less. Probably because they think they'll become instant stars. I say the people who should be on tv are those know how to use a condom...

I meant to pick the other one. All of the teenagers on those shows are stupid. Yes, most pregnant teens are stupid, but not all. I think they just give teenagers reason to bully other teenagers who are pregnant - and they are going through enough.

taking them off the tv won't help the fact that underage pregnancy happens and regardless if its on tv or not won't stop teens from having sex i dont even think they would bother to watch a show like this but it might raise awareness for the parents if they begin to see their child acting in the same manner as the people featured on the show
