TLC's New Show 'High School Moms' Premieres Sunday: Should Pregnant Teen Reality Shows Be Banned?

First there was "16 and Pregnant"... then there was "Teen Mom"... now, there's "High School Moms." TLC's new six-part series on -- you guessed it -- teen pregnancy will debut Sunday and it will follow teenagers at Denver's Florence Crittenton High School as they cope with pregnancy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What a unique reality show idea!

high school moms

According to the official description of the show on the TLC website, "'High School Moms' follows the real-life drama at a Colorado high school devoted exclusively to pregnant girls and teen moms. Every day brings new challenges to the school’s dedicated teachers and students, as the girls try to balance schoolwork, sonograms, diapers and dreams of a bright future."

We're glad these girls are getting the support they need, but do shows like these glamorize teen pregnancy? Or do they actually DETER teens from getting pregnant? We're about ready to make the claim that they should all get off the air -- for good!

Its a free country. We chose what we watch, and we shouldn't be limited to only shows that SOME people find useful. Don't watch it if you don't like it. It's also useful to teens showing how stressful being a parent in high school can be. It's like Beyond Scared Straight for sluts

Even though the premise of reality television is irking in general, I don't see any reason why this particular show should be banned over any other. It could be beneificial to teen mothers and fathers to have to witness, in some form, all of the terror of parenthood before they opt out of that box of rubbers.

Teens are having sex regardless of how good of a parent you think you are. Better to have well informed, wise, decision making children than oblivious experimental ones.

There is no such thing as having too much information or being too well prepared.

You speak the truth! I saw some pregnancy related reality show in high school and it just furthered my conviction that I would never turn out like that.

I don't think that these shows glamourize teen pregnancy, if anything they deter many young girls from getting pregnant. I saw Teen Mom TWICE and wanted to gouge my eyes out. I would never want to be associated with the idiots on that show. If anyone "idolizes" those girls then they are already too far down the drain to be helped.

I doubt anybody actually thinks that.

Edited: I doubt anybody who would have made a good decision in the first place would think like that.

Unfortunately, there are girls who purposely get pregnant for stupid reasons.
The pregnancy pact was a group of girls who tried to get pregnant at the same time so they could raise their kids together.
Before I graduated, a crapload of my friends got pregnant, and another girl at school got pregnant because she actually thought she could get on MTV.

How dumb are the people (girls and boys included) at your school? I suppose there were quite a few pregnancies at my high school as well but since I didn't know the girls I just chalked it up as silly accidents. I can't imagine someone idiotic enough to actually make that decision, but I suppose they are out there.

From my freshman year to my senior year, I've seen 3 to 4 pregnancies PER YEAR.
The people at my school ( lot of them black who make me ashamed to BE black) are very very stupid. A good number of the kids I've met have the grammar and spelling of 5th to 6th graders, cuz they spend their time skipping school and doing drugs!

As a teenager, I hate crappy reality shows exploiting teen parenthood. To me, this is horrible! Teen mothers always have it hard already. Why make a reality show about it?
P.S. I am a teenager but I am NOT a teen mother nor do I ever plan to be. I dislike kids and I don't want be a mother in my teens. Or mother period.
I plan on being an author.

When you consider the story of how two friends became pregnant so they could apply to one of those types of shows.... and how one became all upset when she wasn't chosen..... Yeah, they need to be taken off.

I honestly don't think it helps teen pregnancy at all specially with shows competing for ratings and obviously not geared toward educating teens you want to educate your teen about pregnancy try a movie like Juno instead.

Banning isn't quite the word I'd use, it's a bit too NWO for my taste. However, let's be blunt--the shows glorify the heck out of teen pregnancy. Let's not forget how impressionable teenagers are and they take everything so literally; in combination with the overall entitlement, petulance and superficiality of teens today...id say please don't provoke them any more than they already are, take the shows off air

These are bad options. I don't get why someone would a) want to be on a show about teen moms b) make a show about teen moms or c) watch a show about teen moms, but hey, it's their choice.

I think if people want to watch it, they should continue to show it. If, like me, you have no interest in it, watch something else.

Why shouldn't they be allowed to be on TV? It is not our fault that they got pregnant before they are finished with school or completely mature.

Theses shows are ridiculous do they not understand that the only thing they are doing by airing these shows are prevoking young children to get pregnant! My kids will not be Aloud to watch such thing all your doing is rewarding this kids that have these baby's at such a young age! let them live there lifes like everyone else so then they can see how hard it is to work for a living instead of getting paid to be video taped and put on tv!
