TLC's New Show 'High School Moms' Premieres Sunday: Should Pregnant Teen Reality Shows Be Banned?

First there was "16 and Pregnant"... then there was "Teen Mom"... now, there's "High School Moms." TLC's new six-part series on -- you guessed it -- teen pregnancy will debut Sunday and it will follow teenagers at Denver's Florence Crittenton High School as they cope with pregnancy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What a unique reality show idea!

high school moms

According to the official description of the show on the TLC website, "'High School Moms' follows the real-life drama at a Colorado high school devoted exclusively to pregnant girls and teen moms. Every day brings new challenges to the school’s dedicated teachers and students, as the girls try to balance schoolwork, sonograms, diapers and dreams of a bright future."

We're glad these girls are getting the support they need, but do shows like these glamorize teen pregnancy? Or do they actually DETER teens from getting pregnant? We're about ready to make the claim that they should all get off the air -- for good!

These teen parent type shows just glorify being a young mother. That is just irresponsible and encouraging young people to get pregnant.

No, banning a show will not teach responsibility.

I think that they were probably started as a cautionary tale ... but I think all it has done is sensationalize the whole thing!

Come on, girls! Go get pregnant, grab that shot at being on tv for making the stupidest mistake of your life!

    Ridiculous.

Originally, it was a good idea that made teens think twice abt getting into these situations. But enough already! It's ok to follow the original teen moms & show their struggles. But glamorizing it by ushering in new generations makes it have the opposite effect. Teens think 'if I get pregnant, I can get on tv'. So banned, no. But seriously considered as to the influence they have on teens.

It glorifies pregnancy FAR more than it teaches about it.

"Hey, get pregnant and the nation can recognize you for being a young mom on TV! GO FAME!" No.

I wanted to vote yes and no but not available anyways I hope their helpful to the teens who aren't pregnant and they decide not to be like the girls on tv. I know when I watch with the grandgirls, they really get upset to see how stupid some of these boys and girls are--I just hope they learn NOT to be like them.

I think its hurting more than helping. Teens are more 'inspired' to get pregnant because of the glorifying of teen pregnancy on tv. Being a teen mom is far from glorious.

Hopefully all of the 5h!t that many of these silly little tarts cop (literally & metaphorically!!) as a result of being a teen mom will put other would-be "teen moms" off the idea & perhaps be more careful re: birth control in the future....

Pregnant Teens, High School Moms? WTF is happening today?

Yea, it's almost like the "Body Snatchers” by alien babies.

Most women that get pregnant nowadays and have baby’s unmarried with all the contraceptives available are looked down upon, yes still today. Especially if they are teens.

Teens that have these babies are almost always shallow minded and probably want a live doll to play-like, be-like adults, not caring about their education and having a teen’s life which will leave their young lives incomplete.

If you don't like it, don't watch. MTV died with Curt Cobain anyways.

These shows serve one purpose: setting an example for our kids not to end up like the losers on MTV.

They are helpful to America. By undermining the parents and feeding this new social consciousness that having a kid young is cool. Besides, we need a population increase. They are calling for the draft again, need cannon fodder to fight in the comming war. This is social engineering at work.

Of course they should be banned! This is what has brought us further in ruins in our current generation! Why would we want to encourage this on a teenager? Is this the example we want to keep permanently?

These shows are just promoting it. "Oh, you're pregnant, lemme film you for money"
It's pathetic that it's aired, and even more that people watch it.
Last time I checked, it wasn't right for children to be having kids.

When i had a daughter in high school i thought all girls should get the norplant or something like it when they turned 13 so they couldnt get pregnant for at least 5 years. we dont gain anything when a kid has a baby. micheal jackson said it best, "if you cant take care of a baby, then dont have a baby".

As long as the message of them isn't "this is cool! You can be a teen mom too!" but "being a teen mom is hard and to be avoided if at all possible."

I do not agree that they should be banned (and especially do not accept the perception that somehow exploiting a situation is helpful to anyone) ... but it is a privately owned business. No one is forced to watch. Can we give people proper credit for choice?

Only when pregnancy becomes a crime. In a country the prides itself (or used to) on freedom of choice, nothing should be banned. There was a piece on the TV news last night about schools suspending & expelling students for being pregnant. I don't condone teen pregnancy. But I don't condone punishment for it, while making it harder to get an abortion.

    I think they should.

It's disgusting how teenagers think of pregnancy now. I know a fifteen year old at my high school who got pregnant and she posted the ultra sound on facebook saying, "OMGGGG! CAN'T WAIT TO BUY IT CUTE LITTLE CLOTHES!" and all her little friends were congratulating her with stuff like "Omg! so excited!" and "Yaaaay so happy for you. You're a mommy!! I'm going with you to pick out the clothes!!! (; <3" Now do you think that girl's actually ready for a kid? No way. All she's talking about is buying it clothes. Um, what about the part about actually being responsible for another human life? She's acting like it's like a baby doll or something. She just wants to dress it up and tote it around like some kind of trophy. And I mean, I understand embracing a situation you can't change. But I mean, these kids think of being pregnant as some kind of cool status symbol and that's really, really messed up. And yeah, I'm sick of these shows continuing to glamorize teen pregnancy and I know that the way the media portrays it contributes to the way that teens react to it.

Yeah, and half these baby bombs have the honor of being raised by their grandparents or even greatgrandparents, after all, it is too much to expect the poor little girls to give up their life to tend the baby, they are just not up to it.

Barf, Barf, Barf, it ticks me off no end, what ever happened to the Aspirin therapy, hold one between the knees when on a date, makes the deed ever so much more difficult, pretty much applies to boys as well.

UNLESS they stop glorifying teen pregnancy. They should make it like those funny anti-drug commercials, except geared towards anti-pregnancy

Even better, scientists should bio-engineer people so they can't have kids until they're a responsible age, like 30
