'Titanic' 3D to Hit Theaters: Sink or Swim?

Banking on the success of his latest film, "Avatar," director James Cameron will release a 3-D version of his record-breaking 1997 film "Titanic" next year.

According to USA Today, "Titanic" will be re-released in theaters on April 6, 2012 -- the 100th anniversary of the sailing of the Titanic.

Cameron wrote in a statement, "There's a whole generation that's never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be Titanic as you've never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."

So, Cameron is basically saying that, even though true fans have already seen the movie at least 70 times, he knows that those fans have kids, and those kids are now old enough to pay money to see it themselves.

He also wants you to know how painstaking it was to convert it to 3-D, because that was clearly necessary.

I don't know about the 3D thing, but I'd totally go see it in theaters again. I saw it like 5 times in theaters the first time, but that's OK. :-) It was a long time ago.

It was a fantastic movie, and to see it in theatres again, 3D or not, will be a treat.
I don't think it will turn out to be a big ripoff like Avatar when Cameron re-released it with added insignificant footage.

There are some movies that are so moving that they should NEVER be remade. 3D, 4D, whatever, You simply can't recycle the kinds of emotions that are caused by a unique experience.

Unfortunately. I really wish this 3D gimmick would just go away. I've not seen a movie yet where it improved the experience of a good movie. I've seen it used as spectacle, but not film making and, sorry, I see this Titanic 3D move as simply a marketing concept on how to justify a re-release for purely money-making reasons. Evidently Cameron wasn't satisfied with the $1.8B Titanic made the first time around and the fact that, until his own Avatar, it was the highest grossing film of all time. What? He wants to regain the title? Duel his children? What a dad...

In the shallow end at least. It won't be a breakthrough, but it'll get some money from the original fans.

Please spend more more on this money pit that went so far over budget the studio wanted to shut it down when it was being original made and James Cameron forfeited ALL pay just to get them let him finish it. It might Cameron's way of actually see some money this time around by doing this.

I guess he thinks he can pull a similar act that George Lucas did with the revamping first three Star Wars movies and a new marketing campaign.

Why would they re-edit a legendary classical movie into something we see everytime at the movie theathers? Why isn't that everything classic has to be changed? Why?
