Johnny Cash wrote songs about hardships just like almost any country singer does today. Here's the difference though. Johnny Cash actually went through those hardships, he went to prison and rehab, he had severe drug problems, etc. All country singers do today is sit on the high horse they're daddies built for them and write songs about fucking a tractor.
Tells you how much this country has changed. They once allowed people a second chance, but now condemn them. Johnny Cash is a member of a lost generation.
I have come to appreciate Johnny Cashes music and I do like some other country--just not the twangy stuff. "I went out to buy me a pack of cigarrettes I only had 350, I need another fifty cents, I went back out to my truck to dig behind the seats and that is where I found me the a picture of my wife--can you imagine the rest!!!
Johnny, along with Orbison, Everly Brothers, and sooooo many more, were never limited as "country" artists. They were the epitome of early rock and roll, whose roots were country and the blues.
Johnny lived hard. He worked hard and played hard, always a rebel to the norm. Through it all, he had that pure voice. You FEEL what he is singing to you.
Johnny makes me weep, tears of joy, tears of sorrow, tears of love, tears of...life
Johnny cash never went to prison as an inmate. He went to jail for a few misdemeanors, where he stayed over night, but never spent the night in a prison. He did a concert in Fulsom Prison ..
I met Johnny on the plane to Vietnam where they did a concert Tour....
Johnny Cash told it like it was, and right up until the end. He’s the reason I wear a lot black and the reason he did too, and certainly not because I’m a missguided little emo, screamo, dicko or what these little wussies call themselves these days. Here’s just one of his last ones as he still sings about our real world….
Johnny Cash was by no means the only one in country music who "been there and done that." And some were even more talented than Cash. Merle Haggard for one.
I also don't know where you get your idea that someone must have had a drug addiction and gone to jail to have any credibility.
I like most types of music. About the only types of music I don't like are opera and heavy metal. Rap I don't consider music, and also don't like that. But country, blues, rock, jazz and everything else is cool for me.
I'm not really a country fan but there are some artists that I like. I've always loved Johnny Cash, although he had a drug problem he really wasn't in prison. Many country songs are patriotic which is cool. Many, of course, are very sad.
I think because he played in a prison. He may have gone to jail or something and maybe it was exaggerated because it added to the mystique of "The Man in Black".
Cash didn't really go to prison, unless it was to sing. He did spend some nights in jail, most notable one in Starkville Miss. immortalized in song. You might be thinking of Haggerd who actually did some prison time. But, I agree Cash was the tops as a writer and an artist.
I surely miss Johnny Cash....

Today's country music is comparable to light rock from the 60's and 70's.
