I agree with the "I love both" opinion...But The Who steal it just for me...Their music was revolutionary and they introduced so much to the world of rock. Both bands were unique for the times and I love em both....But so many good British Bands came through from the 60's - 70's.
Uriah Heep, Hawkwind, T Rex, David Bowie, CREAM, The Beatles,Rolling Stones The Experience. All excellent and from a time when music was real and played with Soul!
Also both Robert Plant and John Bonham were born in my County of Worcestershire.
You CANNOT put Zeppelin next to ANYONE and compare them - they were totally a one of a kind band, and nobody will ever be as awesome as they were - period.
Who won the poll, dude? I guess you're part of the insignificant minority. Why do you even bother? Led Zeppelin sold 300 million albums!!! That's more than TWICE as many as the Who. Maybe you enjoy fighting losing battles.
I chose Led Zeppelin because I can always listen to them, I love the Who but I am not always in the mood for their music. Still, I think Who's Next is one the best rock albums ever made.
I sould say The Who edges out Led Zepplin.
Artist wise, Zep had the better lead Guitarist in Jimmy Paige while The Who had the better lead singer in Daltrey and the better drummer in Keith Moon.
Both experimented with the music and pushed the envelope. Zep had more hits and certified rock anthems ("Stairway To Heaven", "Immigrant Song", "Black Dog") "but when they recorded a bomb song, it sure did stank.(IMHO "Dyer maker" sucks).. The Who had three certified Rock Anthems which two early pioneering examples of the synthesiser in Rock music, "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again", (and "Who are You"). But the Who created Musical history and a worldwide sensation when Pete Tousand took their 2nd concept album and turned it into the world's first Rock Opera - "Tommy" (double Album). And then The Who followed it up with another rock opera "Quadrophenia"(double album). How many bands tries to copy "Tommy" with their own rock operas? Dozens of them. (At least Tommy went 2x Platinum)
But then Zep had a little thing called "Physical Graffiti" which out sold almost everything -:
Argentina (CAPIF) Gold 30,000x
France (SNEP) Gold 100,000*
Germany (BVMI) Gold 250,000^
United Kingdom (BPI) 2× Platinum 600,000^
United States (RIAA) 16× Platinum 8,000,000^

Check out Lady Gaga's cover version of D'yer Maker on YouTube. From what I have read, LED ZEPPELIN have sold over 300 million albums, about twice as many as the Who. However, the Who played Woodstock and Led Zeppelin didn't. Peter Grant, Zeppelin's manager, wanted them to concentrate on their US tour and not share the limelight with other bands. BIG MISTAKE!!!! The Who came out from England especially for Woodstock. They played a super, scorching set. I have heard some of this show.
see the Woodstock concert film. (It has some early Scorsese work in there (he only filmed a few parts of it that wasn't the acts on stage)) My brothers have both albums and the who's set was indeed hot. and I'll take a pass on Lady Gaga's version of "Dyer maker". I don't like the song. I'll take the Lord Of The Rings inspired "No Quarter" over "Dyer Maker"
I honestly don't know that one since they are one of the most influential rock group of all time with 800 million albums sold worldwide and with two of the best albums recorded ever "Dark Side Of The Moon" and of course rock opera "The Wall". (Don't forget "Aminals"). They are members of the Rock hall of fame. They have been honored by other artists like Bowie, U2, and others. Their songs have been covered by "the Foo Fighters or Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, Tool, Queensryche, Scissor Sisters, Rush, Radiohead, Gorillaz, Nine Inch Nails, Primus and the Smashing Pumpkins, some of whom have even done Pink Floyd covers, have been influenced by them." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... Then there is their classic songs:
- Wish You Were Here - Money - Mother - Us and Them.- Brain Damage - Another Brick In The Wall - Comfortably Numb - Pigs on the wing - "Hey You" .
