During the late '80s and through the '90s, arcades were all the rage for some gaming outside of your parents' house. Soon after, systems like the SNES and the Internet as we know it today took birth, which provided much cheaper and more portable entertainment. Arcades are on a rise, but do you miss them?

you can always wander down to the movies at glendale and play on the games they have there

edit: actually saw an arcade on hunter street the other day attached to a takeaway bar.

Yeah. I have only been to Glendale once after TAFE. I was moved from Hamilton to Glendale campus when Hospitality was being overhauled I never noticed the gaming machines.

I remember (what is left of) Hoytts at Charlestown. They have Time Crisis 2 and a couple other games. I remember in the late 80s to early 90s when that whole now empty floor space was bustling with the largest candy dispensary I'd seen at that age among other things. $9.90c tickets are never going to save that place. Even if the price is right the seats are very uncomfortable and the acoustics are bad.

hahah love taking this way off topic.. hoyts charlestown has done up all the cinemas now with new seats and screens - still not as good as glendale though and they have sub $10 tickets at the moment as well

Maybe we weren't exactly training for an endurance race. But at least in those days we got out of the HOUSE to play the games. During the late 80s? Seriously? The modern arcade goes back to the early 70s with skee ball, pinball, pong, etc.. And if you want to really go back to the beginning, you need to go back to the penny arcades in the late 19th early 20th century.

Wasn't really around for them, so I can't really miss them. But I've always wanted to go to an actual arcade, and this bar intrigues me.

When I was a kid, my(and possibly some adults' too, I don't know) social interaction happened partly at an arcade. Arcades were a big part of my childhood, particularly Aladdin's Castle, and one called TILT.

Those were challenging games, you either had to be really rich or very good to beat them. There was no end to a lot of them, they just got harder and harder until you lost.
