The Hunger Games Trilogy Surpasses Harry Potter Books on Amazon: Which Series Do You Like Better?

Last week, Amazon announced that Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games trilogy has surpassed J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series in combined print and eBook sales. It is now the online retailer’s bestselling book series ever. This feat is especially impressive considering that the Hunger Games trilogy is much shorter than the Harry Potter saga and has been around for significantly less time.

"Interestingly, this series is only three books versus Harry Potter's seven, and to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time," said Amazon Editorial Director Sara Nelson. “Customers love these books and all three titles are consistently on our Top 10 lists in both print and Kindle formats, and ‘The Hunger Games’ is also the most-borrowed book in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.”

This news came right before the highly anticipated release of The Hunger Games DVD on August 18. The film adaptation of the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire, will again star Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and has a tentative release date of November 22, 2013 according to Lionsgate.

So, SodaHeads? Which series do you like better: The Hunger Games or Harry Potter?

Katniss vs Potter

I really like them both, but Harry Potter is such a different world, where you get into the history of each character and get involved with every little drama. It also shows immense character growth and development in even the smallest of roles in perfect and realistic correlation to events that take place. You are taught the real values in life, such as bravery, loyalty, the sense of what's right and wrong and how to stand up for yourself and what you believe in. The Hunger Games is well written and has a really interesting plot with a delicate view of the politics of a dictatorship in a dystopia, but it just isn't the same. It hasn't inspired an entire generation, it cannot invoke the same level of emotion that J.K. Rowling managed and while I love it and know many people that love it as well, The Hunger Games will not continue to inspire generations to come.

I've only seen the hunger game movie, so I'm not really able to compare the two, but I did enjoy the harry potter novels, well worth the Galleons.

It's weird.. I love the Hunger Games books, read them all, and saw the first movie on its premiering day. On the other hand, I've never read a single Harry Potter book, and have only watched two movies start-to-finish. For some reason, I'm always drawn towards Harry Potter.

To be truthful, I like The Hunger Games way more than Harry Potter.

But that's because they are two completely different stories wrote in two completely different ways. They shouldn't even be compared. Harry Potter is about magical people and creatures fighting together to destroy a strong wizard, while The Hunger Games is about a government supressing their people by killing their children, and then the people rising up against them.

Two completely different story lines that are both amazing. But I like politics and the underlying message of The Hunger Games more. It's something that is more realistic than Harry Potter.

i like both series but Harry Potter was way more popular than the hunger games. the only reason the hunger games got so popular was because of the movie. The movie isn't even half as good as the book. Once everyone started watching the movie they wanted to read the series. So im sticking with Harry Potter as my favorite series.

I love both, but Harry Potter is my favourite. Maybe it's because I read it before I read The Hunger Games, and I was already emotionally attached, if you will, to the characters.... I like the writing better, too.

I grew up with Harry Potter and I think others did too.I'm a sophomore in college and my third grade teacher started reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone" in other words I love Potter :) I haven't seen or read the Hunger Games but it just seems like Twilight. We didn't grow up with it. Sucks for The Hunger games.

For some reason I really, really hated The Hunger Games and it was hard to get past the first few chapters of the first book. I heard the third book -- Mockingjay, was it? -- blew chunks.
Harry Potter I have more of an emotional attachment to and I grew up with it so yeah, I pick Potter.
mockingjay blew chunks harry potter emotional attachment grew yeah potter
  • Tom nico to... 2012/08/20 16:40:17

The third book wasn't that bad. It wasn't as good as the first 2, but it didn't 'blow chunks'. There were several problems with it. The first being major character changes, she spent 2 books building these characters and then they had shifts that aren't accounted for. The second being that everyone is screwed in the end. It was a huge emotional letdown... that and the personality changes made the third book less than stellar.

The Hunger Games movie sucked. If you didn't read the book you were just floating around without a compass. Also the emotional moments, both good and bad, were rather pathetic in the movie. Took Rue's death from a major emotional pitch to the equivalent of 'oh golly gee darn'.

I haven't read the Harry Potter books, so I didn't vote. I did see the first Harry Potter movie, none of the others. So comparing HP's first movie to HG's first movie... HP wins.

No. I'm sorry to hear you haven't grasped all the magic of Harry Potter. Maybe you need to go over the series again? I have nothing against your opinion, but I have read some of your other reply's to other peoples opinions, and basically your bitching them out because they disagree with you. Hunger Games is a FAD. Meaning it is much less complex than Harry Potter is, and is just something that is considered "cool" now, but will end up fading a year or so after the last movie comes out. Hell, maybe even before. Harry Potter still has more actual paperback, printed book copies sold than the hunger games does. It still holds the record for fastest selling book in history. Harry Potter is 100% original, the characters grow organically with the series and their development is practically flawless, and the plot is absolutely uncollapsible. I've fought this argument too many times, and do not wish to do it again, so thats as far as I'll go. It's you who's being the unintelligent one, not everyone else. Fact of the matter is, The Hunger Games doesn't hold a candle to Harry Potter. Harry Potter has been, and not just by me, considered a classic, and it is a beautiful piece of literature. Hunger Games is a mediocre book series with an okay plot, but with some major holes. I could go on ...

Harry Potter will always be better than the Hunger Games and probably most other book and movie adaptations that come along in the future.

yes it is 100% original. you basically just summarized the whole fantasy genre. You want to go down to the absolute bottom of the concept map, and that just doesn't work. Multiple books at a time can have a fantastical concept. (witches and wizards and magic.) Because the book is about magic (aka, the fantasy genre), doesn't make it unoriginal.Yes, the plot and the idea of the story is 100% original. No one has ever thought up a magic boarding school, and a world like hers. She has a great number of unique creatures places, events, characters, etc.... I could say the hunger games isn't original, and have more of a reason to think so. Other books can be about a dystopian society, just like harry potter can be about magic, and witches and wizards, but the hunger games isn't original. Battle royal? Had the same exact plot. And yes, of course no book is 100% flawless either, but the flaws in her books are extremely miniscule. Ever heard of JK Rowlings ghost plots? Those are things that aren't even put in the books, but she knows about them anyway. IE: George's wife and children, harry, ron, and hermione's jobs as adults, etc.... Each Harry Potter book, yes EACH. SINGLE. BOOK, grossed more money than any single Hunger Games book. And these are actual printed copies I'm talking about. Harry Potter has in fact been named the most famous book and movie series in history. It's movies have been very highly acclaimed. Type in each movie on rottentomatoes.com and see what ratings come up.You can have your opinion, but harry potter is way more complex and detailed than the hunger games. But, this is a definite fact: Harry Potter will not fade as soon as the hunger games will. It will live on for hundreds of years. Yes, it is definitely a legend and has revolutionised an era. Stop trying to make my argument sound stupid, because we all know, I have the winning one. I never gave up, you immature 15 year old with the IQ of a fly. :) Also, the hunger games, terrible character development. Katniss grew into, well, katniss. So did practically every other character. The only one with a little growth was gale.
