The Hunger Games Trilogy Surpasses Harry Potter Books on Amazon: Which Series Do You Like Better?

Last week, Amazon announced that Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games trilogy has surpassed J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series in combined print and eBook sales. It is now the online retailer’s bestselling book series ever. This feat is especially impressive considering that the Hunger Games trilogy is much shorter than the Harry Potter saga and has been around for significantly less time.

"Interestingly, this series is only three books versus Harry Potter's seven, and to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time," said Amazon Editorial Director Sara Nelson. “Customers love these books and all three titles are consistently on our Top 10 lists in both print and Kindle formats, and ‘The Hunger Games’ is also the most-borrowed book in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.”

This news came right before the highly anticipated release of The Hunger Games DVD on August 18. The film adaptation of the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire, will again star Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and has a tentative release date of November 22, 2013 according to Lionsgate.

So, SodaHeads? Which series do you like better: The Hunger Games or Harry Potter?

Katniss vs Potter

I really like them both, but Harry Potter is such a different world, where you get into the history of each character and get involved with every little drama. It also shows immense character growth and development in even the smallest of roles in perfect and realistic correlation to events that take place. You are taught the real values in life, such as bravery, loyalty, the sense of what's right and wrong and how to stand up for yourself and what you believe in. The Hunger Games is well written and has a really interesting plot with a delicate view of the politics of a dictatorship in a dystopia, but it just isn't the same. It hasn't inspired an entire generation, it cannot invoke the same level of emotion that J.K. Rowling managed and while I love it and know many people that love it as well, The Hunger Games will not continue to inspire generations to come.

yeah and the plateau is a good point. by now u either own it or u dont. HG fans are still growing cuz its a newer series. i remember when there were HP vs Twilight questions, and when the next new series comes out it there will be questions comparing it to Harry Potter. i believe HP made a more lasting impression and will be adored by more generations to come. and dont worry, i dont mind if u dont like it, im not gonna try and convert u. lol :)

No contest. A whole generation grew up with harry. As harry got older, so did we. The Hunger Games is like twilight: a passing fad.

I love Harry Potter. Of course, it sometimes bugs me that they kill Harry's family all the time but I still like it. And by the way I HATE the hunger games stupid books, only because of Katniss. The only reason I kept reading was because of Peeta.

What really makes HP special is how the characters grow up with each other. With that said, the best series of Fantasy/Sci Fi novels ever written are Steven King's Dark Tower. Harry, Bella, Edward, Katniss... none of them last 2 minutes in Roland's world.

    roland deschain

To this day, Dark Tower is the only series of novels that actually made me tear up. If you've read them, you know why. It's because you genuinely love the main characters in this story and care about what happens to them. HP is the same way... Magic is just the backdrop... it's all about friends growing up together and remaining true to each other for life.

I want to get into that series so damn badly, but I can never find the Gunslinger (that is the first one right?) and I can't bring myself to buy a series without first getting part one!

As much as I like the Hunger Games, I don't think that it will ever surpass the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter was more memorable and left a permanent lasting impression on me, something that the Hunger Games could only do temporarily.

Sadly, I haven't read the Hunger Games yet. But I should.

I do suspect that it hasn't passed Potter in total sales, though. Potter is a little older, so would have had a much higher percentage of brick and mortar sales.

It seems like pop-culture is trying to take a story about a post-apocalyptic fight to the future and turn it into another twilight - that's where the "team" business comes from. I hear that Ender's game is going to become a film and I pray to God that they don't throw in more of this tweeny-bopper love-triangle nonsense. I know that it's part of the books, but they're doing this to get tween girls to like Sci Fi/Fantasy. Leave my favorite genre of literature alone.

Agreed, and the book is not even a romance- I felt that the love triangle aspect was annoying and did not add much to the plot. I do not necessarily like the resolution of the series either. People mooning over romance also has nothing to do with the values the story imparts- bravery, loyalty and sacrifice.

I disagree with The Hunger Games not inspiring generations to come- although I am also a Harry Potter fan. There are few few successful novels/books that star a young woman that is both realistic and a good role model.

I agree completely, it's not that the Hunger Games is more popular or has a better storyline than Harry Potter its the way we buy books today that makes the Hunger Games top Amazon's lists. Not to mention they give away a free book of the hunger games trilogy with the purchase of each kindle.

The Hunger Games was ok, but it wasn't as thought out and planned as Harry Potter. That and the characters in The Hunger Games didn't really capture my heart like they did in Harry Potter.
