Breaking Dawn, Part ... who cares? "The Hunger Games" officially opens today, and it just might take a bite out of the "Twilight" franchise.

The blockbuster adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling Young Adult novels about kids forced to kill other kids to survive while the nation watches on TV earned at least $25 million from its midnight screenings, and may be on track to hit $30 million, The Huffington Post reports.

"Breaking Dawn - Part 1" grossed $30.25 from midnight screenings last November, which helps explain why everyone is calling "The Hunger Games" the new "Twilight." (That, and the fact that rabid tweens and teens can't get enough.) The film is expected to earn between $120-125 million this weekend, according to Variety, which would make it the biggest movie this year and the biggest March opening ever, TheWrap.com reports.

The studio, Lionsgate, has the rights to three more films, meaning "Hunger Games" insanity (Hun-sanity?) isn't going anywhere. From "The Hunger Games" to "Twilight" to "Harry Potter," click through our slideshow and let us know: What's the best fantasy franchise?

You have no idea how happy it makes me to know that most people have voted Harry Potter and not LOTR or Star Wards. (I never really liked those movies)

Although "Star Wars" comes in a close second. More like a tie, but AS USUAL, this SodaHead poll doesn't have a neutral option.
I also boldly claim that most of the 550 people (at the time of this comment) who voted for "The Hunger Games" hadn't read the books or even heard about them until the hype about the movie came up.
The Hunger Games and Twilight, and maybe even Harry Potter, are fads IMHO. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have been around for decades.
Maybe those others just came a bit late to the party; I don't know. Time will tell if the next generation is still going to be all "ZOMG EDWARD <3 !!!11!!!eleven".

Hard choice, because I love EVERYTHING on that list except for Narnia and Twilight, never really got into those two. But I HAD to pick Harry Potter in a way because I grew up watching Harry Potter over the last 10 years or so and so these are my people and characters. But I will say this, Hunger Games is not really a fantasy series as it is more futuristic and I may even say adventure then fantasy, because there is nothing in the storyline that really puts it in the fantasy category. And by the way, Hunger Games is not the new twilight, it's the new Harry Potter because Harry Potter is BETTER than Twilight and so is The Hunger Games.

This is just too hard of a question. I am a huge fan on LOTR, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. Just read The Hunger Games and it was amazing. I love Narnia too. In my opinion Twilight isn't even in the same category as the rest.

Tough... tough... tough decision. I selected Lord of the Rings, but it was a coin toss.

Star Wars, in it's day, would have easily won out for its cutting edge technology back in the 70's. I remember seeing it for the first time, when that Empire battle cruiser appeared on screen the first time, with the dolby sound... It was beyond impressive!

All other contenders for the spot are based on books. As far as the movies go star wars is by far the best movie series. As far as books go, The hunger games is an amazing book and a good movie but nothing compares to actually reading the book. For obvious reasons the movie loses many many many details that make the book so engrossing.

This was Incredible hard because If going by books I love HP but the movies for Lord of the Rings were hands down greatly made. the last Harry Potters cut out some battle scenes that pissed me off. Star Wars is a Classic and is up there whoever chose Twilight likes bad stories and even worse acting

The Hunger Games books were very thought provoking. The 1984 scenario of the Panem world is frightening but, unfortunately, familiar. Shows how big gov't and Hollywood types will ultimately act. The idea that the Capitol demanded that once a year, the districts be reminded that they are there to serve the gov't capitol and never to rise up and question them again,so they are each made ro sacrifice 2 citizens from each district to battle to the death in a reality show for the elite's entertainment. Very poignant, But I find that many who are reviewing the movie have not read the book, so are getting it all wrong.

You can't beat the books that set the bar for the entire genre. Lets be real, JR Tolken's elements, mythology, and beastology are used in just about every fantasy since including Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, and even the largest fantasy gaming movement ever, Dungeon's and Dragons (Which then sparked MMO's like, EverQuest (I & II), World of Warcraft, Aeon, Rift, Ultima Online, Dungeon's and Dragons Online, and the list keeps going).

You can't get any bigger than "Lord of the Rings" -- it is a living legend already.

Harry Potter is like, my childhood so I have to go with that although I lovelovelove The Hunger Games, too. I went to the midnight premier. I love Star Wars and Narnia, too, and Lord of the Rings is pretty cool but I've never read the books or seen all of all of the movies but I need to. Twilight...it's just a disgrace and The Hunger Games is not "the new Twilight." I'm so tired of people comparing it to that stupid series, it's not all about the love, that's just a small part of it kind of like in Harry Potter although it does have to be a larger part of HG since it is a shorter series but Twilight is all about the love. And Katniss is a muchhhhh better heroine than Bella. When Edward left, Bella shut down for months and then tried to kill her self to "see" him. Katniss didn't just shut down when Peeta wasn't there.
