Breaking Dawn, Part ... who cares? "The Hunger Games" officially opens today, and it just might take a bite out of the "Twilight" franchise.

The blockbuster adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling Young Adult novels about kids forced to kill other kids to survive while the nation watches on TV earned at least $25 million from its midnight screenings, and may be on track to hit $30 million, The Huffington Post reports.

"Breaking Dawn - Part 1" grossed $30.25 from midnight screenings last November, which helps explain why everyone is calling "The Hunger Games" the new "Twilight." (That, and the fact that rabid tweens and teens can't get enough.) The film is expected to earn between $120-125 million this weekend, according to Variety, which would make it the biggest movie this year and the biggest March opening ever, TheWrap.com reports.

The studio, Lionsgate, has the rights to three more films, meaning "Hunger Games" insanity (Hun-sanity?) isn't going anywhere. From "The Hunger Games" to "Twilight" to "Harry Potter," click through our slideshow and let us know: What's the best fantasy franchise?

It captured my imagination the first time I read it... I wasn't even planning to read the book, I just felt bored and read the first few lines in the book, the next thing I know, I'm reading the next book, one after another..

Harry Potter does have someof the good die, so it ain't just for kids. Besides I've never read a book that made me laugh and cry that much, and before anyone comments about it, I've read a lot of books in my short lifetime. Sure I grew up with HP and that might be why I love it, but I haven't read another book that hit me like this one, or changed my way of seeing things. Besides the older I got, the funnier it became. All the teenage jokes that started coming as the figures matured slipped over my head in the start, but now I can recognize them and laugh at the hidden, yet innocent meaning that they had :) It will always be a HP fan, and nothing can change that. And I will read the first one for my kids, when I get some, and if they like it, I will keep reading them, but of course if they don'tlike them, then I can't do anything about it. Each there likes, but I like Twilight too. It might have a tame ending without any good ones dying, but I still like it, thou the lang wasn't the best in the start, but everyone has to start at one point, and about the sparklestuff ... come on people, blame the author not the figures. And why do people say that Edward's gay? He waited for about 100 years before he fell for one girl, and if you were to read Midnight Sun you'll see how lost he...

How many males of these days can say that they act mature and with some respect towards the girl he likes? Manners and being a gentleman has died in my oppinion, and Twilight simply show a bit of the stuff that boys should learn again, because some girls do like a gentleman, that is what the fancrase shows after all, thou I can't take people who only like the movies because there are handsome boys in it. Those aren't real fans in my oppinion =__=

As much as I love Hunger Games, Harry Potter is hands down the best! I doubt I will ever read a book I like as much as it. Every detail in JK Rowling's world is captivating, and when I read it, it makes everything in my tiny corner of the universe okay again :)

This is so tough! Because I love most of them except for Twilight.

    1st Harry Potter
    2nd Lord of the Rings
3rd Hunger Games & Star Wars
    4th Chronicles of Narnia
    5th Twilight

I have to say I love Fantasy movies and all of these were created by masterminds. I'm sorry to say Twilight seems too out of place. I've bought & read all the Twilight books and I've bought & watched all the movies except for BD Part II of course. I've liked it in the very beginning before all the hype started. I've liked the idea of that girl falling for a vampire because I was just 16 years old that time and about to discover my first boyfriend. I've grown out of it. When I rethink the whole series now it seems pretty ridiculous to me, the sparkling part and the "falling in love with a stalker". Just now that I'm more mature I recognize the Twilight franchise as Stephenie Meyer's supernatural fantasy but not a classic Fantasy movie. I think if she had written it for an adult audience with adult characters it would have a different feel and not such a bad message toward teens. There is no such thing as a "perfect" human being and there's just so many wrong messages in between a storyline that could've been lovely. I'd much rather have loved a story between two lovers who have lovable imperfections. Then all...

I'd much rather have loved a story between two lovers who have lovable imperfections. Then all the sex in the BD book (I was really annoyed after a while because the story wasn't going on) and the imprinting - even though I love the general idea of Renesmee. More depth to the characters would've been great. They are not very colorful and identifiable. As much as I love Stephenie Meyer's "Host" which has got some amazing characters and storyline, "Twilight" was a failure. I will faithfully watch it till the end though and as for the Hunger Games being compared with Twilight - The Hunger Games actually brings about a message to open our eyes to the wrongs going on in society, Katniss is a far better character than Bella. The Movie is better, too - the cast was more talented than the "Twilight" Cast even though I like Kristen Stewart, Tayor Lautner and Robert Pattinson as people from what I've seen in interviews.

Harry Potter will always be the best, hands down. It changed the lives of a generation of people, and will continue to do so for generations to come. They were more than just books. After all, the magic might have been happening inside our heads, but why on earth should that mean that it was not real? :)

I love Harry Potter and grew up reading the books and watching the films. But right now I'm in love with the Hunger Games. People are always saying it's Battle Royale with a new name, but it's so much better than that! Don't knock it till you try it, okay? I love LOTR and Star Wars. Twilight is sh*t, end of. And Narnia just doesn't appeal to me.

I voted Star Wars since I grew up with the franchise back in '77 when I saw the first one as a kid. Nothing has come close to capturing that magic again. Not to say I'm not a fan of LOTR or even HP, which are both equally well written and timeless pieces of literature. I just read the Hunger Games trilogy and the emotions and ideas it presents are still stirring in me, a sign of a true classic in the making. But I dare say that HG are more based in reality and what happens after a war than a fantasy. It will be interesting to see what people think of the HG trilogy once all the movies are done. Trust me, it will separate the fantasy lovers from the realists. If you've read Mockingjay, you'll know what I mean.

Well of course Hunger Games! It's the Hottest series around AND its just plain awesome, you know except the ending of the third bool, that is a joke, I hate it, they need to rewrite the last book, but Hunger Games is now more popular than the other fantasy books.
  • Madman007 Cheyenne 2012/03/30 12:00:48 (edited)

Cheyenne, you just proved my point about how The Hunger Games should not be considered a fantasy. The third book ended as it should have. People die in war. They don't all just "win" a war and go home and be happy about it. Out of all of these franchises, the HG are the closest to reality. The fact that you feel the third book should be rewritten proves that it moved you. Suzanne Collins didn't feed us a fairy tale like the others in this category does. She gave us something better; a reason to think. Which is what a great novel should do.

That's true. I haven't watch the movies yet but I've read all the books and am planning to watch the movie soon. The books are amazing but I always wonder if things can turn out like her novels in real life. And I believe it can. No, I'm not wishing that one day our world will narrow down to only the Capitol and all the Districts and that horrible game, but Suzanne Collins made the books as real as possible. And I admire that. The games, the people who died and the ending, they're perfect since you can't really have 'real' happy endings after you've gone through what Katniss had. The memories of the Hunger Games will always be haunting her. It might not be the ideal ending but that's what people got to deal with. Not some 'everybody-lives-and-tell-the... ending. Praises for Suzanne for the Hunger Games!

I haven't seen The Hunger Games nor have I read the books but I am considering putting them on my reading list. So far I believe that Lord of the Rings has been the best of the fantasy film series but that is subject to change. Harry Potter comes a close second. Star Wars is more sci-fi than fantasy in my estimation but even as a fantasy it is not as good as the others. I was completely unimpressed with Twilight and have not watched sequels.
