The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reported the largest-ever Friday-Sunday domestic debut for a December release, bringing in an estimated $84.8 million at the weekend box office.

To do so, this first installment of The Hobbit trilogy soared past previous December record-holder Will Smith’s “I Am Legend” (which brought in $77.2 million in 2007), as well as James Cameron’s “Avatar” (which brought in $77 million in 2009). When compared to Peter Jackson’s other J.R.R. Tolkien films, The Hobbit stands as the biggest opener; that is until ticket prices are adjusted for inflation and The Return of the King jumps to the top spot.

A couple factors may have prevented The Hobbit from obtaining a nine-figure opening weekend—“a hallmark of the modern-day blockbuster” according to E! Online. To begin with, pre-Christmas December movies have never performed as well as movies released in May, July, or November. Additionally, the school-shooting tragedy in Newton, CT may have depressed movie attendance.

What about you SodaHeads? Have you seen The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?

But I'm planing on it. Oh I have some advice for you. Just because a lot of people go to the opening of a movie doesn't automatically mean its a good movie.

Yes. It's entertaining enough but it's so bloated. It suffers from a lack of sufficient editing. It takes a good 45 minutes to actually get into the story, and thus makes the initial first hour or so really quite tedious. The cameos are a nice touch, but it weighs the film down further and could have easily have been cut and saved a good 15-20 minutes of the film. It's an entertaining film, but it takes too long to get anything entertaining. Andy Serkis and Martain Freeman's performances make the film, their interaction is mesmerising. Both are fabulous actors.

It's part 1 of 3 so an ending isn't gonna happen to neatly tie things up you dumb ass.

And I thought it was phenomenal. Almost on par with Lord of the Rings.
