The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reported the largest-ever Friday-Sunday domestic debut for a December release, bringing in an estimated $84.8 million at the weekend box office.
To do so, this first installment of The Hobbit trilogy soared past previous December record-holder Will Smith’s “I Am Legend” (which brought in $77.2 million in 2007), as well as James Cameron’s “Avatar” (which brought in $77 million in 2009). When compared to Peter Jackson’s other J.R.R. Tolkien films, The Hobbit stands as the biggest opener; that is until ticket prices are adjusted for inflation and The Return of the King jumps to the top spot.
A couple factors may have prevented The Hobbit from obtaining a nine-figure opening weekend—“a hallmark of the modern-day blockbuster” according to E! Online. To begin with, pre-Christmas December movies have never performed as well as movies released in May, July, or November. Additionally, the school-shooting tragedy in Newton, CT may have depressed movie attendance.
