The Doors Release 'New' Jim Morrison Song: Wonderful or Whatever?

It's kind of hard to believe there's an unreleased Doors song, sung by Jim Morrison, coming out more than 40 years after his death. Labels usually scour the vaults of deceased artists for anything they can get to market, but producer Bruce Botnick, who worked on the band's "L.A. Woman" album, discovered an untapped gem called "She Smells So Nice" while he was listening to the "L.A. Woman" studio sessions.

The song is an unpolished, uptempo blues number reminiscent of the era it was recorded in -- late '70, early '71. The three-and-a-half minute song will be available on the deluxe remastered version of "L.A. Woman," due out on January 24, but has been made widely available on the band's Facebook page. What do you think of the recently discovered song?

I am a Doors fan since they played 'The Golden Bear' in Huntington Beach, CA (way back) ... and this release should have remained "unreleased". >)

We see why they left it off the album. Jim's vocal was not up to his normal standard.

The Doors are my second favourite group and I love Jim Morrison. This is a great song, but I just hope they can do something to clean it up before including it on the released version. There are problems with clarity on the vocals.

A very old musician once told me "There are only two kinds of music. Good or bad." This is good. I love Jim Morrison.

My answer isn't either of the above. There needs to be a third option. I'm in between on this one. It's no "Light My Fire" or "People are Strange." It does have some of that Doors magic, but isn't up to the band's best standards. I like it. But I don't love it.

Don't artists exercise some discretion as to what's released? If so, and if Morrison chose not to have this on the album, maybe we should just respect his original instincts. Ditto other deceased rock stars who left unpublished recordings.

pretty standard 12-bar blues format, or close. when musicians who do not know each other get together and jam, maybe in a music store or at a party this is what they usually do. everybody knows how to do it and it is hard to screw up, but one can put one's own spin on it. I am only a minor door's fan so i don't know if this is their only 12-bar blues song, but it has all the elements of good 12 bar music -cool turn-arounds etc. so i think it is worthwhile to release after all these years - why not?

my caveat -- I only listened once, so maybe there is more there

Nice to hear Jim Morrison's improvising style of singing, and I particularly liked the drumming, subtle dynamic time changes then an unsubtle brief change to half-time towards the end of the song to accompany the lyrics "it's a long time coming", NICE. I love the title too, real and avoiding poetic airs. The problems with the distortion on the microphone and the weak lead guitar break that didn't quite work may have been significant in the decision not to include it on an album.

MEH. Can't imagine why they left it off the album...I think an 'untapped gem' is an interesting phrase...It's So-K....and what is it with all of the re-masters that these music companies are coming out with??? Greedy bastards...

Not quite sure the cut itself is wonderful as Morrison's vocal production is pretty crappy, but great guitar work and organ work by Krieger and Manzarek and a decent backbeat by Densmore save the tune. Plus, an unheard of tune from a stellar influential band? That alone makes it 'wonderful'.

I loved it! Jim influenced my art my entire life with his macabre and surreal lyrics and poetry. You can see my portrait of the Lizard King I created in memoriam recently on the 40th anniversary of his death. It's on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspo...

Always interesting to hear something new by Jim Morrison. Is it anything fantastic and cryptically poetic? No...

I think there would be a lot more interesting stuff found on old buried bootlegs of the bands early days when Jim would riff out freeform poetry.
