The Bowl Championship Series Is No Longer: Happy or Horrible?

After years and years of complaining for various schools, fans, and coaches, the Bowl Championship Series will be no more in college football. The presidential oversight committee of college football has agreed to do away with the BCS in 2014 and will institute a four-team playoff.

"A four-team playoff doesn't go too far; it goes just the right amount," said Virginia Tech president Charles Sterger, chair of the presidential oversight committee, according to ESPN.com. "We are very pleased with this arrangement even though some issues & remain to be finalized." We're sure most college football fans will be quite pleased as well.

A selection committee will select the four teams in the playoffs, most likely with the best overall records, especially against top NCAA competition. Sites for current bowl games can and will be used for the semifinals. The four-team playoff concept is in effect from 2014 to 2025.

Good start. I'd like to see a 16 team round robin format.

Shoot even 6 teams with the number 1 seed getting a bye in first round would be a little better but it is a step in the right direction.

Football and sports are blown way out of proportion in this country!
Quick! Who's in the starting lineup?
Ok, now who is your town's Mayor and who is your State and US representative?
    Uh huh, thought so.
Your gov't complaint card, just, hand it over.

Do I get extra points for also knowing the city council members and zoning board members? One can have more than one interest my friend. Your point however is understood there are many who could not answer your questions.

Happy. This means there MIGHT be some fairness and equity in college football and some of the smaller teams may finally get a shot at it.

In 2004, Auburn and Hawaii were both undefeated and neither got a shot at the championship, UNFAIR, USC was stripped of it's "win" that year.

This way the top 4 can play off. However, (you knew there was one) since not all divisions have a division title game, all of them should HAVE to have one now. Without that some teams like, SEC teams, will end up playing 14 or 15 games, and non division championship teams will have to ONLY play 13 or 14. Unfair, espesially since the SEC is the meanest and hardest division to play in, AND they have a championship game.

Crapola, my number of games is all wrong, I forgot the new teams in the SEC, LOVE the Aggies not so much Mizzou and I don't even remember if there are more.

My hope is that down the road the size of Division 1 will shrink. That we'll have 4 or 5 conferences with 12-16 teams in each. As NCAA rules are now, you're only permitted to have a championship game if you have 12 or more. As we see, power conferences are loading up on teams, as you mentioned the SEC grabbing AM and Mizzou (formerly my team who are going to get killed).

Some of the problems with college football come from the unbalanced scheduling, getting to put cream puffs on the docket. Thats why Hawaii didn't get a shot. Hawaii is in one of the Conferences that wouldn't survive in my opinion. They routinely play weak teams so they aren't going to get the same consideration other teams get.

Hawaii has to play every game from behind the eight ball, and they have a HUGE disadvantage for recruiting and team cost. Their football budget is just over 2 Million a year-which is half of a decent coaches salary, they have to fly 5 hours, minimum, to look at recruits and travel further to play then play with the accumulated effects of jet lag. Add the expense of all the travel, and the lowest budget of any team and they add up to a major disadvantage. But at least they do field a decent team and attempt greatness.

The SEC took what was offered-Texas A and M was getting ribbed in their division in favor of Texas and Oklahoma. They got less revenue, less air time, less attention and Texas was given exclusive TV rights and several other perks that the Aggies were ddenied-so, WELCOME to th eSEC, now step your game up cause this IS the big leagues.

I love the Aggies, but I love Auburn and Florida, and a lot of teams, but SEC dominates and always will. It is all we have down here.

I wish Navy was in a decent division, so they could be more competitive.

I went to college, had to work my butt off to get a good degree in 3 years, which I did. Sports are money makers I agree, but they are also put in front of academics which is wrong. How many football or basketball players have invented or found a cure for something, or redefined ages old ideas?

Your point is well taken but also keep in mind that top athletes keep a lot of people employed both on the College and Professional levels. That is a worthwhile function even if it doesn't add greatly to a specific body of knowledge. There may not have been many athletes who have become breakthrough scientists for example, but I'm sure there are more than a few breakthrough scientists who have benefited from strong sports programs at their University.
