We knew “The Avengers” was going to be a huge hit. But the biggest opening weekend of all time? That truly is a feat worthy of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

With a $200.3 million domestic debut, “The Avengers” knocked previous champion “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which brought in $169 million in its opening weekend, from the top spot. “The Dark Knight,” with its $158 million opening, now sits at third and “The Hunger Games,” with its $152 million opening, was pushed to fourth.

The superhero blockbuster is also doing incredibly well overseas. Since opening internationally a week earlier, “The Avengers” has already brought in $441.5 million abroad. That raised the film’s worldwide total to $641.8 million in just a week and a half, already surpassing the global box office totals of its Marvel forerunners “Captain America” ($364 million), “Thor” ($449 million), “Iron Man” ($585 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($624 million).

"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "With this film, this weekend, anything is possible."

"The Avengers" was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Are you surprised that “The Avengers” set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever?

No peice of unoriginal junk, doing well, suprises me, look at who it is aimed, the wonderfully simple minded youth of our nation. It does not need any real story,or retainable value, just a lot of computer flashliness (fake looking action) and lots of bright. pretty colours.
    Of course it did well.

I can take out the word, "youth."
I do like some comics, I always liked the, "Fantastic Four,"
The movies now, are still very unoriginal and full of cheesy, fake looking, action and have shallow one dementional charactors and weak story lines. It is okay to like that, but sad if you cannot see it,

What the hell? I clicked on no, and it selected yes.

So no I wasn't surprised at how well it did, saw it on Friday, and again on Sunday.

One of the best movies I've seen recently.

I'm not surprised at all, even the theater in town that's never been crowded was sold out of every show until 9:00pm when we got there at about 5:30.

Why would I be? It is a huge movie opening with all sorts of superheroes that men want to see and the actors are all hot, so women want to see them, too. And let's not forget it costs a small fortune to go to a movie now, so of course they will hit the high millions this weekend.

Not at all surprised when it costs a small fortune to just go see a movie. Movies will continue to break records like this as long as theaters continue to raise the price on tickets.

A huge media conglomerate (Disney) has been promoting this movie for years. The Iron man, Incredible Hulk, Captain America & Thor movies were all building toward this one. So, they had the audience primed.

And, IMO, they delivered. Damn good movie.

Comic book movies seem to get good box office, despite that most people SAY comic books are for kids, because most adults are nostalgic for the comics they read earlier in life.

I LOVE the fact that Avengers did so.. but am I surprised.. yeah! This is a movie about comic book characters and is in the fantasy genre. I get that kids and those of us who grew up on the comics would be the ones attending, but to rake in 200 million in the first weekend and what.. over 450 million worldwide???? Holy moly.. yeah.. I just never saw that coming! What's great about it is that we're going to see more movies in this genre and I'm all for it! AWESOME!

It's such an amazing movie, Joss Whedon did a fabulous job, and he's a fabulous director. Why wouldn't it? There are so many fabulous actors and it's well filmed. Why would you be surprised?
