We knew “The Avengers” was going to be a huge hit. But the biggest opening weekend of all time? That truly is a feat worthy of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
With a $200.3 million domestic debut, “The Avengers” knocked previous champion “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which brought in $169 million in its opening weekend, from the top spot. “The Dark Knight,” with its $158 million opening, now sits at third and “The Hunger Games,” with its $152 million opening, was pushed to fourth.
The superhero blockbuster is also doing incredibly well overseas. Since opening internationally a week earlier, “The Avengers” has already brought in $441.5 million abroad. That raised the film’s worldwide total to $641.8 million in just a week and a half, already surpassing the global box office totals of its Marvel forerunners “Captain America” ($364 million), “Thor” ($449 million), “Iron Man” ($585 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($624 million).

"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "With this film, this weekend, anything is possible."
"The Avengers" was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.
So, what about you SodaHeads? Are you surprised that “The Avengers” set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever?

What I'd like to see are the "opening weekend" numbers adjusted for inflation. I wonder where Avengers would rank then?
The movie rocked it had superb action and hilarious one-liners. You could take the kids and enjoy your comic-book heroes from your own childhood.
Also, they didn't give away the best parts in the trailers like so many movies do today.
I am waiting for the Black Widow & Hawkeye movies to hit the big screen.
But I'm not surprised people love these super hero movies. I'm just not one of them. I'm, as usual, at odds with the masses... I liked Green Lantern and HATED Thor... If people gave me free tickets to Captain America, I wouldn't have gone and you would have had to pay me to see Hulk. The only one I like at all in the current group is Iron Man.. and that's all on Robert Downey jr. ... that man melts my shoes.
This next weekend I Will be at the theater... Dark Shadows is out and that is right up my alley.
She is a bit cautious about her favorite Soap being turned into a campy comedy, but she does love a good comedy so she is giving it a chance. Heaven help them if they screw it up.
