We knew “The Avengers” was going to be a huge hit. But the biggest opening weekend of all time? That truly is a feat worthy of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

With a $200.3 million domestic debut, “The Avengers” knocked previous champion “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which brought in $169 million in its opening weekend, from the top spot. “The Dark Knight,” with its $158 million opening, now sits at third and “The Hunger Games,” with its $152 million opening, was pushed to fourth.

The superhero blockbuster is also doing incredibly well overseas. Since opening internationally a week earlier, “The Avengers” has already brought in $441.5 million abroad. That raised the film’s worldwide total to $641.8 million in just a week and a half, already surpassing the global box office totals of its Marvel forerunners “Captain America” ($364 million), “Thor” ($449 million), “Iron Man” ($585 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($624 million).

"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "With this film, this weekend, anything is possible."

"The Avengers" was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Are you surprised that “The Avengers” set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever?

No that's where the agreement stops, they're all fantastic! But joker is the best guy featured in the comics :)

Joker is the best villain ever, no disputes. Batman is arguably the best hero as well

Are you a fan of Superman? I think he's ok, Batman's definitely better.

I am of the same point of view :) batman seems to be a more logical, relatable hero, whereas superman's more..unhuman.

Errrrrr correction, Sentry is Marvel's shameless equivalent of Superman.

Yes Thor is awesome. I just saw a cartoon of him on Netflix (Ultimate Avengers 2 think it is) where he cast rune stone oracle to get insight from his father Odin.
Watching that I couldn't help but think if the American Christian Right would have a problem with their children watching that, and if they did not, would it be different if it was say Black Panther shaking Kola nuts doing a oracle reading for Ifa?

Read the comics, he's way stronger in comics than in cartoons and movies.

He pushed the weight of Yggsdrasil, Yggsdrasil is a tree that has the size that made planets look like it's apples and it is attached to 9 planetary worlds so therefore making it's weight immensely more than dozens of planets. Thor pushed Yggsdrasil by himself in his normal state of strength, imagine how strong he could be in Warrior Madness which multiplies his strength by 10.

Thor once absorbed enough energy to destroy an entire galaxy with a blast of explosion too. Even though Lightning is his trademark, he can also perform fiery attacks as well as manipulate water.

No doubt Thor is the bomb. I really like the way he is portrayed in the Ultimate Avengers cartoon. I don't really care for the grim, love sick version of him. They should keep him carefree and jovial, sorta like Hercules. Also he should be ladies man. It is so lame that he is hung on Jane Foster.

Ultimate Avengers cartoon?? hmm I've always liked the comic version better but oh well. Anyway I just think that Thor is overall more powerful than Superman, Sentry beats both for sure.

Any movie with Scarlet Johansson wearing a form fitting black leather/vinyl Assassin's outfit, I'd not be surprised that at least half the population will flock to see it.
