‘The Avengers’ Sets Record for Biggest Opening Weekend Ever: Are You Surprised?

We knew “The Avengers” was going to be a huge hit. But the biggest opening weekend of all time? That truly is a feat worthy of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

With a $200.3 million domestic debut, “The Avengers” knocked previous champion “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which brought in $169 million in its opening weekend, from the top spot. “The Dark Knight,” with its $158 million opening, now sits at third and “The Hunger Games,” with its $152 million opening, was pushed to fourth.

The superhero blockbuster is also doing incredibly well overseas. Since opening internationally a week earlier, “The Avengers” has already brought in $441.5 million abroad. That raised the film’s worldwide total to $641.8 million in just a week and a half, already surpassing the global box office totals of its Marvel forerunners “Captain America” ($364 million), “Thor” ($449 million), “Iron Man” ($585 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($624 million).

"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "With this film, this weekend, anything is possible."

"The Avengers" was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Are you surprised that “The Avengers” set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever?

I knew it'd either be awesome or bad but still really good and it turned out to be even awesomer than I thought it'd be. Definitely the best movie I've ever seen.

Why are people surprised when movies that look very good and are greatly advertised have a good opening weekend? But then, on the other hand, people praise crap that doesn't seem to set any records. Why?

Movies like this could've easily failed, but I'm glad to be proven wrong. I was worried it'd be another Transformers movie and thankfully Marvel has once again exceeded my expectations. Can't wait for 2013, for Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. Hopefully even Ant-Man will debut his first solo film. Looking forward to seeing what they have in stored for the future.

I take that back...I actually am very surprised because fewer people are going to the movies these days being that its about $30 for two people to see it in 3D. But then again, every year, some movie always outdoes all the other movies than the year before.

The hype machine was cranking pretty hard on this one.

What I'd like to see are the "opening weekend" numbers adjusted for inflation. I wonder where Avengers would rank then?

If they did that, they'd stop with the actual numbers and just use the phrase "more money than God".

You have a team of stars from block-buster hits and your are going to dominate.
The movie rocked it had superb action and hilarious one-liners. You could take the kids and enjoy your comic-book heroes from your own childhood.

Also, they didn't give away the best parts in the trailers like so many movies do today.

I am waiting for the Black Widow & Hawkeye movies to hit the big screen.

Voted No but it registered as Yes.. oh well.. Quick vote does that sometimes.

But I'm not surprised people love these super hero movies. I'm just not one of them. I'm, as usual, at odds with the masses... I liked Green Lantern and HATED Thor... If people gave me free tickets to Captain America, I wouldn't have gone and you would have had to pay me to see Hulk. The only one I like at all in the current group is Iron Man.. and that's all on Robert Downey jr. ... that man melts my shoes.

This next weekend I Will be at the theater... Dark Shadows is out and that is right up my alley.

You and my wife. I got her the whole "Dark Shadows" series since she loved it as a kid. We even visited the estates where they shot the soaps for her birthday a few years back.

She is a bit cautious about her favorite Soap being turned into a campy comedy, but she does love a good comedy so she is giving it a chance. Heaven help them if they screw it up.

Remember a year or two ago, when the fans were voicing concern and hoping that the director wouldn't screw up the film and the characters?

Needless to say that their prays had been answered. Can't wait to see this film! =)
