We knew “The Avengers” was going to be a huge hit. But the biggest opening weekend of all time? That truly is a feat worthy of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

With a $200.3 million domestic debut, “The Avengers” knocked previous champion “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which brought in $169 million in its opening weekend, from the top spot. “The Dark Knight,” with its $158 million opening, now sits at third and “The Hunger Games,” with its $152 million opening, was pushed to fourth.

The superhero blockbuster is also doing incredibly well overseas. Since opening internationally a week earlier, “The Avengers” has already brought in $441.5 million abroad. That raised the film’s worldwide total to $641.8 million in just a week and a half, already surpassing the global box office totals of its Marvel forerunners “Captain America” ($364 million), “Thor” ($449 million), “Iron Man” ($585 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($624 million).

"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution. "With this film, this weekend, anything is possible."

"The Avengers" was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Are you surprised that “The Avengers” set a new record for the biggest box office opening ever?

Kinda. I wasn't expecting it to be this huge success, although I did think it was going to be a good movie. To buy the ticket, I spent 30 minutes in the line, then had to wait about 7 hours to watch it because all of the earlier sessions were sold-out. It was all worth it, though. It was worth each cent, especially because it was 3-d. Definitely one of the best movies I've ever watched.

I'm not suprised at all with the international numbers at all. Also after the records set and broken in the first day of release on iTunes when both of the Avengers trailers were unleashed spoke of potential box office breaking numers. Combine that with the hype from the Superbowl spot and you've got a great marketing campaign. Then you've got hott male superheroes to be eye candy for us women, action sequences and Scarlet Jo as eye candy for you guys, and a kid friendly escapist fun appropriate for all ages for all ages and you've got a solid blockbuster. Add in geek royalty director Joss Wheldon and you'll get a buzzed about movie on the internet. The Avengers was the best film of the Comic Book and Superhero genre I've seen in theater. It was an event film packed with fun action, witty dialogue, excellent visuals, and great pacing. I was never bored and I enjoyed watching the whole thing with my husband and daughters and they enjoyed it as well. It's a must see movie and is a portrait of how 2 write a CBM.

Not even close, but people don't give him his proper credentials. He had Chris Hemmsworth punch him in the face FOR REAL because he wanted the shot so bad. He isn't one of the Avengers though.
  • Mavii Zacky D 2012/05/09 22:49:54
Right, but he is (most of the time) the main villain in the movie. But, uh, yeah. I also never really said anything about him being in the Avengers (group).

You have to use a formula, technically Titanic is still the best.
  • Happy_E... Zacky D 2012/05/09 07:09:47
Technically, Avatar blew Titanic out of the water. Pun intended.
  • Zacky D Happy_E... 2012/07/02 02:12:50
    Zacky D
no, it didn't, but it doesn't matter because the dude who made Avatar made Titanic too.
  • Zacky D Zacky D 2012/07/02 02:13:55

thats like saying Ben Hur isn't one of the highest grossing films of all time just because of when it was made. That movie won 11 academy awards, only matched by lord of the rings.
  • Happy_E... Zacky D 2012/07/02 06:41:01
Oh snap, it wasn't only matched by lord of the rings 3, but also Titanic, which also won 11 academy awards. And I never said Titanic didn't make a lot of money, just that Avatar outgrossed it. Which is true. By over 500 million bucks.
  • Zacky D Happy_E... 2012/07/25 01:05:05
    Zacky D
    Not true. Inflation brah.
  • Happy_E... Zacky D 2012/07/25 16:59:09
You fail. Again. Avatar outgrosses Titanic even when inflation is taken into account. With inflation, Avatar is the second highest-grossing movie of all time, behind Gone With The Wind and eedging past Star Wars. Titanic is in fourth place.
