'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Picks Prison Over Rehab: Would You Rather Go to Prison or Rehab?

Back in December, "Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood managed to get out of a five-year jail sentence by agreeing to complete a drug rehab program, but last week in court she told a judge that she couldn't finish it. She agreed to go to prison instead. She told ABC News, "In my situation, I felt in the program there were a lot of eyes on me. And it was very uncomfortable. I was not using my anti-psych medication even."

Portwood's legal trouble began in 2010, when she was charged with three felonies for hitting her ex-fiance Gary Shirley in front of their daughter. She managed to get off with two years of probation, but violated her probation when she got in a fight and was found with prescription medication that she didn't have a prescription for. She also attempted suicide on a few occasions. So, this whole ordeal has got us wondering. If you were in Amber Portwood's shoes -- which, for your sake, we hope you aren't -- would you pick prison or rehab?

Two years probation for three counts of assault? That was the first miscarriage of justice. She should have spent at least six months in jail.

Five years in prison for 'fighting', possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, and the most heinous crime of all- violating her probation? Second miscarriage of justice. Why five freaking years? Two years is more appropriate I think. But did she start the fight or was she merely defending herself? It doesn't say.

And why are they making her attend rehab? Were the prescription drugs narcotic? If so, why aren't they banned? If some narcotic drugs are legal, why ban any?

I swear, every time I read about criminal cases, I can't help but cringe in disgust and disbelief at what an epic pile of horse manure it all is.

and? they have to know someone to do so. in prison its more likely she will go cold turkey. rehab just keeps the person on drugs, the ones the govt says are legal.

Obviously she has a drug problem, and isn't this where she belongs. Judge should just rule that.

No, it's not where you belong if you have a drug problem. Addiction should be treated as a health care issue, not a crime.
  • ccaveinn TheNigh... 2012/06/11 14:27:19

It should when it causes you to commit a crime. Addiction is sad, but it isn't an excuse, if you let it take control of your life, you still have to pay the consequences for your actions.

If drugs cause people to commit crimes, then drugs should be illegal but, because people are not in control, they cannot be held responsible for their crimes.

On the other hand, if people are always responsible for their crimes, then drugs do not make people commit crimes and there is no excuse to criminalize drugs.

In her mind she didn't really choose 5 years in prison over rehab. She has been getting appeased and just generally having her ass kissed for her entire life. Because she figured out a long time ago if she got mad and threw a tantrum then people would comply and obey. So now she thinks this isn't real and all she has to do is act upset and they will comply and turn her loose with a stern warning and some psyche meds. What's that you say, nobody could be that incredibly stupid? This complete waste of oxygen and DNA possesses way more stupidity than is required for that. My wife watches that show and so I have seen her more than once. This is somebody who is not a nice person, who also happens to be very stupid.

These people are disgusting. And here we just shower them with attention. We should be shaming people like this. We should be shaming the human garbage that produce these shows and put them on television. GOFBD.

In life, you make certain decisions, and they dictate what happens in your life (not always the case, but most of the time, especially in cases like these). If she would have avoided drugs, dating morons, acting like a tough guy and MTV cameras, she probably wouldn't be faced with this decision. I just hope she's forced to do the full 5 years as originally sentenced and that her kid (I assume she has one as it said she was on a show called Teen Mom) is put into a quality home where he/she can develop away from all this garbage.

If anyone should be going to prison it should be her ex for being a stalker and leaving repeatedly with her daughter not saying where he was going in other words creep

....because in prison, I might be spared watching white trash reality shows like "Teen Mom".
Besides, in prison, she gets five years respite from having to actually shoulder the responsibilty of rasing her own child.

Prison inmates shouldn't be making friends, lifting weights, watching tv, and having visitors. Time in prison should be solitary confinement from the day the sentence starts to the day it ends. Only contact they should get is when they stick the food tray through the cell door. One meal a day too.

Tell it to the courts, particularly the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Even PC and solitary inmates are coddled. I worked in PC units for a couple years.

If all you have to do is prove you did drugs and can successfully ween yourself off of them to get out of a 5 year prison sentence, then every move SHOULD be analyzed.

However, this is based on the term of the sentence.

Amber is looking at five years. I'd sooner put a bullet through my head than spend THAT much time behind bars.

However if it was shorter - and I'm talking 30 days at BEST - I'd probably take prison in that instance.... why?

Well for one, generally when you're sentenced to any form of rehab, it isn't free. And it's not cheap at that. Naturally I'd take the short sentence that doesn't cost me a dime.

But five years? Yeah THAT long isn't worth it. No thank you!

I would choose rehab over prison.. Just think about all the convicts just staring eye to eye at you from the next cell over, that is just a scary thought just thinking of it. And I'm pretty sure you would have to do self defense on some even if prisoners had an urge to like hurt you or worse! But that's just me..
