'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Picks Prison Over Rehab: Would You Rather Go to Prison or Rehab?

Back in December, "Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood managed to get out of a five-year jail sentence by agreeing to complete a drug rehab program, but last week in court she told a judge that she couldn't finish it. She agreed to go to prison instead. She told ABC News, "In my situation, I felt in the program there were a lot of eyes on me. And it was very uncomfortable. I was not using my anti-psych medication even."

Portwood's legal trouble began in 2010, when she was charged with three felonies for hitting her ex-fiance Gary Shirley in front of their daughter. She managed to get off with two years of probation, but violated her probation when she got in a fight and was found with prescription medication that she didn't have a prescription for. She also attempted suicide on a few occasions. So, this whole ordeal has got us wondering. If you were in Amber Portwood's shoes -- which, for your sake, we hope you aren't -- would you pick prison or rehab?

It is time for the person who posted this question to rehab; and add an "other"classification for those of us who decide not to do drugs or alcohol,or otherwise break the law.

No one would go to prison--unless they're crazy. Okay, the whole thing with the I-felt-there-were-eyes-on-me.... me...that will not be missing in prison. I mean, come on, it is a lot more dangerous to be in prison than in rehab. If she expects to get any drugs there or alcohol, she's very much mistaken.

If i was on drugs i wouldn't want to go to rehab. At least in prison there is a chance of getting something.

You would think rehab, but if the person has no intentions of getting off drugs you can see why they might chose prison. In other words hasn't learned any from all this.

I was eternally grateful for the help I got giving up smoking; if I needed to give up anything stronger then I'd definitely want as much help as I could get.

After all... she'll come out of gaol, still have her problems, and end up back in the same situation.

I was in prison for 15 years. Rehab doesn't remotely compare to the horrors of prison life. There is a component of addiction that resists being "told" what to do. I'm not surprised that she opted for prison. In prison no one gives a damn if you recover or not. Prison is a lucrative business! It is in the interest of jobs and employment that people return to jail as soon as possible. Imagine if 50 percent never returned once released. Accordingly, 50 percent of the custodial staff, as well as the administrative staff, vendors, etc., would no longer be needed , and would be on the unemployment lines competing with the ex-convict for employment! Rehabilitation takes a back seat to providing others with a livelihood. Those 15 years that I was in the NJ prison system I was not offered 5 minutes with any type of counselor! Yet my first adult conviction was for "use of heroin" on 9/21/1967. I was 19 years old. It didn't take rocket science to assess that I was headed down a dark road. Prison is a misinformed option. Pray for her!

In her situation I would go to rehab because I would want to get off the hard drugs she was taking. She basically decided that she was not going to make it through the program without screwing up, at which point she would serve the 5 years anyway (plus any additional sentence if she got arrested again). If you are committed to recovery, rehab is a godsend. If you are committed to staying on oxycontin or whatever else, you might as well just take the jail... That said, there is a saying in AA: "fake it until you make it." In other words just go to AA and/or rehab no matter how you really feel about stopping, and you will get the program eventually.

They'll be more people watching her in a prison. I'd take the rehab any day. I don't understand why they wouldn't give her the anti-psych meds. That sounds odd to me. It would help her recovery.
She says she was very uncomfortable too? Like prison is going to be more comfortable. What an idiot.

Prison might be "easier" and if you're lazy and self-centered, sure, go to prison. But with rehab you have a chance at bettering yourself. Getting better at anything requires discipline and hard work.

But they are very very different. With prison, it's just sitting around waiting for your sentence to finish. Rehab is a lot more relaxed, yes. But, in rehab you have to be engaged in the program. You have to be emotional, and it can be really hard to talk about how you feel and why you do what you do. Rehab is about opening up, and prison is about shutting down.
  • Walter ... MorganRae 2012/06/11 15:02:52

yeah but when you get out you still have to go to rehab and NA as court ordered so it is mood point argueing.

If she does all her time she won't be on parole with AA or NA meetings, urinalysis, or anything else. Only people with parole or other early release have to go to meetings or rehab (if ordered to). Unless she also got sentenced to attend rehab after jail she will be a free woman after 5 years served. If you KNOW that you will DEFINITELY screw up in rehab (or do not WANT to stay clean) then jail makes more sense because you will get jailed anyway when you miss a meeting or test positive for drugs.
  • MorganRae Walter ... 2012/06/11 15:41:21
    MorganRae
Well you definitely don't have to go to rehab once you get out of rehab...
NA (narcotics anonymous) MIGHT be court ordered, although AA is frequented much more.

and "mood point" is absolutely ridiculous. It is MOOT point, which means that the topic is debatable.
  • Andrew MorganRae 2012/06/11 15:55:12

Yup. You are right... and while I did not read the exact details of the choice she was given by the judge, I don't think they gave her the choice of rehab or jail AND rehab.

Here in lies the problem with a lot of current programming MTV, it would make it impossible for someone to get the help they need. I do believe Rehab would be the better choice, getting a chance to start a life over without substances is important.

But the other part of this programs like MTV's teen mom should not exist. I remember when MTV was about MUSIC.
