Awful news for George Lopez, and worrisome news for Conan O'Brien.
TBS has canceled "Lopez Tonight," the late-night talk show hosted by comedian and actor George Lopez since 2009, due to bad ratings and the cost of producing the show.
If you haven't seen "Lopez Tonight," it's pretty standard late-night fare. Lopez hits the stage with a monologue made up of a handful of one-liners, moves into a selection of skits and segments -- some new, some recurring -- then invites a celebrity or two to chat with him about their latest project.
One thing that set "Lopez" apart was the host's efforts to appeal to a specifically Latino viewership. That's not to say he ignored other demographics by any means, but it was clear from his routines and his own statements that he sought to offer Latino-Americans their own flavor of late-night TV.
We'll be sad to see Lopez go, as we tuned in to his show quite a few times after "Conan" and enjoyed it quite a bit. If we had known his ratings were in trouble, maybe we would have tuned in more often.
Speaking of Conan, TBS shot down the idea that "Conan" would be next to go, even though ratings have dipped there as well. Lopez gave up his 10 p.m. time slot in order to air after "Conan," with the thinking being that Lopez's show would do better with "Conan" as a lead-in, rather than the other way around.
The last episode of "Lopez Tonight" will air this Thursday, followed by a few weeks of reruns, then reruns of "The Office."

Now: Less than 34,000. The page got taken down and replaced, and only 34,000 have bothered to find it again.
Looks like people are finally opening their eyes.
Something about that show rubbed me the wrong way. It seemed self congratulatory before it even aired it's first episode.
It always seemed like George just got a bunch of his friends to come on. Nothing really interesting or funny was ever said.
Ratings for Conan have slipped, according to the main description of this question. Aww, where are his bandwagon fans now?
