Given that "Hunger Games" fans tend to be on the young side, we're not sure how many of them can afford to spend almost $1,000 on a piece of jewelry. Nevertheless, a $999 Mockingjay pin will go on sale exclusively at Target.com later this month, to coincide with the DVD release of the movie, USA Today reports.

mockingjay pin

Along with the 14-karat gold replica of heroine Katniss Everdeen's Mockingjay pin, with 100 available at $999 each, Target will also sell other "premium items" beginning on Aug. 18, including leather replicas of Katniss' hunting jacket, with 100 available at $349 each, and "The Hunger Games" lithographs autographed by cast members including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, with 100 available for $699 each.

For those of us in the 99 percent, Target is also offering a deluxe edition of "The Hunger Games" in DVD ($20.99) and Blu-ray ($25.99), featuring a collectible case and 45 minutes of exclusive content, USA Today reports. Would you spend almost one grand on a Mockingjay pin, even if you could afford it?

It looks the same as the $5 one I saw at Walmart yesterday. Unless you're an extreme, crazy, insanely obsessed fan that REALLY, REALLY wants it, it's a waste. I love the HG but I wouldn't pay 1K for this. The $5 pin is good enough for me.

As with anything.....an object is "worth" only what people are willing to pay for it.
I'm sure that some people might buy this & $999 is worth it to them.....but not to me.

I'm like a huge die hard fan for the hunger games but with the economy this bad I doubt it's going to sell. But I really really really want one >.< and wouldn't it be worth it to lower the price (a lot) and have millions of people buy it than keeping the price at $999 and only have like a few people buy?

Why does it need to be gold? I'm sure a lot of fans who are interested in the books and though the movie was pretty neat would think that a $10 brass replica is just as nice, and would probably attract a lot more customers.

And Target of all places? If I'm ever fortunate enough to have a grand to blow at
Target, Walmart, or other similar outfits, then I would spend it on useful stuff such as
appliences and electronics. Not on some silly old pin or other piece of jewlery that is
only good for boosting ones ego, or worse, attracting bandits. There are plenty of
scullduggerers out there that would love to get their wicked little paws on a pricy piece
such as that pin in order to fence it, and to that end, they don't give a s**t who they hurt
(or worse) in order to accomplish their sinister goal. Is your life or health really worth an
overpriced piddley-ass little pin? Or the same of your friends and loved ones?

1000 dollars for a pin? I could buy a whole new wardrobe for that.. Plus the movie was a little too tame IMO, way too much bs, not enough killing. Just sayin:)

While I'm a huge fan of the Hunger Games, you can buy Mockingjay pins everywhere for less than a quarter of the price. But, I suppose, if you have cash to burn you should buy it.

The hunger games has gotten a bit too much hype in my opinion. People act like Collins is Hemingway or Shakespeare or something. Come on now, it's not like this plot line hasn't been done a million times before...
